Laboratory and domestic animals quite often harbor dermatophytes in spite of the fact that clinical disease does not exist (1-5). In 1955, Fuentes and Aboulafia (1) isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes from over 13% of 113 apparently healthy guinea-pigs. The virulence of one of these isolates for the guinea-pigs was demonstrated by experimental inoculation. Dolan, et al (2) found that 18% of hair samples from healthy rats and mice contained viable T. mentagrophytes. During epizootics among...

THERE ARE at present several hundred students from West Africa in universities and technical colleges in the United Kingdom. It seems likely, therefore, that many readers of TECHNICAL EDUCATION come into daily contact with these students and that some remarks on the way English is spoken in West Africa may not be out of place.

FROM THE POINT OF VIEW of right education, at the moment in the United Kingdom, there are many who consider that the Public School system is outmoded, that in an egalitarian state its effect on the pupils is not wholly beneficial, that the economy of the country is such that a comprehensive system of education is possible whereby children need not be generally separated from their parents and homes. Some of the pronouncements made in this connection are undeniably true. As far as Uganda is...

1. Faeces from apparently healthy Bantu school children of a periurban district of Johannesburg were examined eight times at regular intervals over a period of 1 year. 2. Of 75 children, 29·3 % experienced at least one salmonella infection and 2·7 % one shigella infection. It is suggested that over a year nearly all children will have one, and many of them several, infections with these pathogens. The infections occurred at a low rate throughout the year. 3. In most cases the infections were...

Ex Africa semper aliquid novi — There is always something new from Africa. (Proverbial from Pliny.) DURING the past decade increased attention has been focused on Africa and the nations that have recently become independent. This interest has mainly involved the implications of their economic potential and political activities. For several reasons an understanding of the medical problems and needs of these countries is perhaps of more immediate concern to the Western physician. The financial...

Abstract The Harvard step test was performed by male students of physical education and male sophomores not specializing in physical education in Cape Province (South Africa), North Carolina, and England. A modified Harvard step test was performed by corresponding groups of women. Assessed by this test, the fittest male physical education students were the English, and the South Africans were fitter than the Americans. English female students of physical education were not significantly...

This personal account of the difficulties and opinions of African students in Britain differs in approach and presentation from many articles that have appeared in RACE, in that it is direct evidence rather than findings based on a body of evidence. It contains insights which we believe to be valuable, and we hope that from time to time papers of this kind will be of interest to our readers.
