In February 1960 the city of Agadir, population then 35,000, was severely damaged by an earthquake. One third of the people perished, and another third were injured. The total direct loss of property has been estimated, roughly, at 60% of the value of all property (other than land) within the city at the time of the earthquake. Indirect losses are unassessed. The great damage to property, and-the high loss of life, are attributable primarily to the weakness of the particular brittle masonry...

IT is often taken for granted that education in general, and especially scientific training1,2, can eliminate the traditional supernatural beliefs widely held in African cultures. The outcome of extensive anthropological studies in this sphere, as discussed, for example, by Horton3, lends little support to this; on the contrary, it shows that such beliefs are deeply rooted in systems of social relations. If, as has been suggested4, a magico-mythical world view is an obstacle to the emergence...

The degree of air pollution in native huts in the New Guinea Highlands has been assessed The “average” concentrations of smoke density, aldehydes, and carbon monoxide measured in the Eastern Highlands, at an altitude of 7,200 feet, were 666 μg/m3 1.08 ppm and 21.3 ppm, respectively, but these figures do not include peak values of 4,862 μg/m3, 3.8 ppm and 150 ppm which were obtained on one occasion soon after startup of the fire. Comparable “average” values in the Western Highlands, at 4,000...

More than 7 years have elapsed since Wilkinson (1) first described contact photo-dermatitis due to tetrachlorosalicylanilide, an antimicrobial agent incorporated into household soap. Over two-hundred cases of photosensitivity to halogenated salicylanilides and related compounds have been reported in the literature since then. It remains conjectural, however, what fraction of the total incidence these reported cases represent. The extent of the problem is quite evident from the fact that...

Encouraged by political support at independence and motivated by a desire for an exemplary, popular education system in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the last seven years allotted a major share of the nation's annual budget to public education. As the nation modernizes to survive in a technically oriented age, Congolese educators have set as their goal the maintenance of cultural identity by the masses; and the achievement of this goal rests on designing meaningful...

The Kila-Warji massif is one of a large number of ring-complexes of Jurassic age which cut the basement rocks of northern Nigeria. It is the only large member of this Nigerian Younger Granite province in which rocks of intermediate composition are dominant over acidic rocks. Structurally the complex presents several features of interest. The southern part——Warji—is a cauldron subsidence structure of volcanic rocks invaded by partly concordant intrusions. In the north the Kila ring-complex...
