Statistics departments, and indeed universities, in South Africa are at present in a considerable state of flux. If one examines the state of tertiary education in South Africa (S.A. henceforth) ten years ago the changes are evident to even a casual observer. Although for many years the traditionally liberal campuses have defied apartheid legislation in formulating admission policies, it is a fairly recent phenomenon that universities such as Natal, Cape Town, Rhodes and Witwatersrand have...

After a brief discussion of the development of Nigerian English, the author classifies Nigerian English into four linguistically‐based varieties by considering how transfers from the indigenous languages affect phonological, syntactic and lexical features. The article argues that an endonormative model must pass two tests – local acceptibility and international intelligibility – and that only one variety of Nigerian English meets these criteria satisfactorily.

Crop cultivation and the rearing of livestock in the open spaces of large third world cities have reached the point where their importance as a part of the urban informal sector can no longer be overlooked. In East Africa, several recent surveys have confirmed that urban cultivation, carried on largely by women, is both prevalent and vital to the livelihood of a significant proportion of the population (Freeman 1991; Rakodi 1988; Mazingira Institute 1987). These surveys complement a rather...

From Middle-Upper Miocene time to the present the African plate has subducted under the so-called ‘Aegea’ microplate. A prominent feature of this continental collision is the past and present volcanic activity along the Hellenic Volcanic Arc (HVA), which is sited 200 km behind the frontal compressional region. Since 1986, several magnetotelluric (MT) surveys have been undertaken along the HVA, and particularly on the islands of Milos, Kos and Nisyros to determine their subsurface electrical...

Education is one of the cornerstones of economic development. Similarly, improving child health is a critical objective of development. Yet there are relatively few studies which examine the interaction between education and health. This paper investigates why children in low income countries often delay primary school enrollment, despite the prediction of human capital theory that schooling will begin at the earliest possible age. The authors explore a number of explanations for delayed...

The purpose of this study was to determine what proportion of African-American students in high school settings, if any, identified music teachers as their role models. The study was also designed to determine whether there were any differences in the subjects' perceptions of the number of African-American students or teachers of their race or sex in their nonmusic versus music classes and to determine whether any significant differences existed between subjects who had or did not have a...
