Summary Magnetite is common in carbonatites, and usually has octahedral habit. Abnormal crystals from Galapo, Tanzania, were long thought to be unique, but such crystals are now known to occur at seven localities in four countries. The magnetite is titaniferous, but not unusual in composition for its provenance. The abnormal crystals typically have large growth pyramids extending in one direction (occasionally in two or more directions). They appear to be formed by superimposition of...

In recent years South African studies have been radically transformed by a new school of work. The essential thrust of this new Marxist school has been to reconceptualise, retheorise and reanalyse the relationship between the economic system and the racial system in South Africa. The traditional liberal school has failed to see the ways and the extent to which important forms of racial domination have actually been integral and functional components of South African capitalism. The Marxist...

In a study of the development of professional attitudes in medical students, a modified version of the Medical Attitudes Inventory (Harris, 1974) was administered to 141 male and female first year medical students in Lagos, Nigeria. The results show that the students have well-defined attitudes on certain issues and are divided on others. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for medical education, attitude research and durability of students' attitudes in and beyond...

In analyzing this period, the main focus is on the inability of this policy to bring about a proper synthesis between theory on paper and actual practice, and the problem of bringing about a proper synthesis between British and Zambian indigenous systems of education. I would like to acknowledge the...

THE Sierra Leone Rise, located in the east equatorial Atlantic, forms a discontinuous chain of seamounts as shallow as 2 km extending with a general NE–SW trend from near the Sierra Leone coast of Africa, to the St Paul fracture zone near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Fig. 1). The origin of this feature has remained a topic of discussion. Sheridan et al.1 have hypothesised that the Sierra Leone Rise is a volcanic structure formed at the beginning of the opening of the Atlantic in the early...

Information was collected through a census and a household survey in Sierra Leone to assess the effect of female education on fertility. Data from Sierra Leone exhibit the inverted U-shape relationship between female education and fertility which has been shown previously in developing countries. This contrasts with findings from developed countries where increases in female education are associated with linear decreases in fertility. The Sierra Leone study showed that reproductive-age...
