In previous reports from this laboratory guinea-pig skin was used as the biological material to investigate the relative in vivo photosensitizing abilities of a number of furocoumarins including 8-methoxy psoralen (Methoxsalen, oxsoralen) (1). It has also been observed that following photosensitization with 8-methoxypsoralen bacteria have a reduced ability to oxidize a number of citric acid cycle and related substrates (2) and rat liver mitochondria lose succinic dehydrogenase activity (3).
