Abstract This qualitative study explores the experiences of Jessica Smith and Donna West (fictitious names), two African American students in a predominantly White teacher education program at a midwest university. Interviews and field observations illuminated these students’ frequent encounters with overt racism, as well as what J. King (1991) called “dysconscious racism"—a form of racism that tacitly accepts dominant White norms and privileges. Their experiences with racism at the...

This cross-sectional survey was carried out to assess epidemiological data concerning dental injuries to the permanent incisors of Syrian children. It included 1087 children aged 9 to 12 years, of both sexes, randomly selected from public and private primary schools in Damascus. The response rate was 100%. The prevalence of traumatic injuries to the permanent incisors rose from 5.2% at the age of 9 years to 11.7% at the age of 12 years (P = 0.007). The difference in prevalence between boys...

Describes a survey, conducted at the Open University of Tanzania and consisting of both open and closed questions, to determine the user needs of their distance education students. Due to the nature of the user survey, in which questionnaires were distributed in person and because it was often less trouble for those surveyed to have a researcher or research assistant write down responses, the questionnaire became, in a sense, an interview for which a list of questions had been drawn up in...

This paper explores the relationship between ethnic diversity and local school funding in Kenyan primary schools. The empirical results paint a picture of pervasive local collective action problems in ethnically diverse Kenyan primary schools. Local ethnic diversity is robustly associated with lower local school funding, less parental involvement in school functions, and fewer desks, latrines, and classrooms per pupil in ninety-seven rural Kenyan primary schools. However, local ethnic...

Drawing upon a nationally representative survey sample of African American (AA) drug injectors and non-injectors, this study tests for a suspected causal association between dropping out of school and the occurrence of injecting drug use (IDU), which remains a major cause of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission in this population. The data are from public use files of the National Household Surveys on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) conducted between 1991 and 1995. From within the NHSDA's...
