Abstract A field study was conducted at three different sites along the Lourens River (South Africa) to assess aquatic macroinvertebrate abundances and community structures in relation to seasonal changes in rainfall and particle‐associated organophosphorous (OP) insecticide contamination. Redundancy analysis indicated OP insecticide contamination (azinphos‐methyl and chlorpyrifos) as the only significant variable determining the community composition. Principal response curves indicated...

This article focuses on the underrepresentation of African American males in gifted and talented programs, and offers a number of key recommendations to practitioners and researchers who seek viable strategies to circumvent this problem. Beyond the focus on underrepresentation, several additional topics for discussion are excogitated to provide a clear perspective on the challenges these students experience in school; namely, (a) definitions of giftedness, (b) identity development, (c)...

Southern Africa is in a critical position with regard to the study of large-scale climate shifts during the Late Quaternary, being located at the boundary between tropical, sub-tropical and temperate climate systems, and also between the Atlantic, Indian and Southern Oceans. Today, the south-western part of the sub-continent receives precipitation mainly from westerly frontal systems in the winter (April to September), whereas the east and north of the region is dominated by summer...

Increasing evidence suggests the involvement of oxidative stress in noise-induced hearing loss. The present study analysed, in an animal experimental model, the time course of the pathogenic mechanisms of noise-induced cochlear damage and the efficacy of the antioxidant drug N-acetylcysteine in reducing noise ototoxicity. Animals were divided into two groups, exposed to noise one treated with N-acetylcysteine for 3 days and one (the control group) with saline. Acoustic trauma was induced by...
