This study investigated the relative effectiveness of cooperative and individualistic instructional strategies on students' problem solving abilities in secondary school chemistry. It made use of a 3 x 3 x 2 quasi-experimental, non-randomized factorial design. Two hundred and fifty (250) Senior Secondary two (SS II) chemistry students were purposively sampled from three public secondary schools in Ilesa Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria. Two research instruments: Researcher's...

Abstract. We present a modeling study of the long-range transport of pollution from Europe, showing that European emissions regularly elevate surface ozone by as much as 20 ppbv in summer in northern Africa and the Near East. European emissions cause 50–150 additional violations per year (i.e., above those that would occur without European pollution) of the European health standard for ozone (8-h average >120 μg/m3 or ~60 ppbv) in northern Africa and the Near East. We estimate that 19 000...

Abstract Aim: This study presents a review of the clinicopathological features of excised submandibular glands over a 16 year period of time at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Materials and methods: A retrospective review of excised submandibular glands over a period of 16 years (January 1990 to December 2005) was conducted. Parameters studied included: age and gender of patients, symptoms and duration of symptoms and histologic diagnosis. Results: A total of 47 patients had...

Abstract This study uses a tracer survey of secondary school completers in Tanzania to analyse the impact of educational qualifications on labour market earnings. We show that the rates of return to the highest educational qualifications for wage employees are not negligible and, at the margin, provide an investment incentive. However, we find little evidence of human capital effects in the earnings determination process for the self-employment sector. Introducing controls for father's...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the prevalence of giardiasis in primary school children in Damascus city and the countryside, and to investigate the possible risk factors for giardiasis infection. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out on school children from 23 primary schools in Damascus, between March and June 2006. Data were collected from 1469 children of both genders from urban and rural regions using structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory analysis of...

We welcome this opportunity for additional discussion of the Lake Malawi Drill Core record. We recognized early in this project that the Zr:Ti record shows a striking qualitative resemblance to records of interstadial DO events as preserved in Greenland [ Brown et al. , 2006 ]. However, additional radiocarbon constraints on the core's chronology, and the need for a mechanistically realistic interpretation of the record throughout MIS 2 and MIS 3 led us to the conclusion that peaks in the...

This paper examines the SMEs performance in Zambia and attempts to identify some practical lessons that Zambia can learn from Southeast Asian countries (with reference to Malaysia) in order to facilitate industrial development through unlocking the potential of its SMEs sector. Malaysia and Zambia were at the same level of economic development as evidenced by similar per capita incomes but Zambia has remained behind economically and its manufacturing sector has stagnated as if both countries...

Contextual features and research problems are among some of the important factors that must be considered in making decisions about the most appropriate research design to employ in designing and undertaking doctoral research. In my doctoral research project, I was significantly influenced by a number of such issues in determining an appropriate research design. As the study focused on a problem confronting an under-represented group – female students – in a unique and complex context, mixed...

The spread of Amblyomma hebraeum has been reported in Zimbabwe. At the same time there was little or no spread in the distribution of Amblyomma variegatum. This paper examines the climatic cycles and their trends in the period 1974-1999 with a view to explaining the abiotic causes of this spread, and of forecasting the likely tendency in climate suitability for both tick species. An annual data-set of rainfall and air temperature was used as a source for climate, together with a...

This paper presents a new cluster of carbonate mounds discovered in 2002 in the Gulf of Cadiz off Morocco (R/V Belgica 2002) in water depths of 500 to 600 m amidst a field of giant mud volcanoes. Multibeam bathymetry, side scan sonar imagery and 2D seismics are analyzed to present four mound provinces: (1) the Pen Duick Mound Province on the Pen Duick Escarpment, (2) the Renard Mound Province on the Renard Ridge, (3) the Vernadsky Mound Province on the Vernadsky Ridge and the Al Idrisi Mound...

[1] Brown et al. [2007] (hereinafter referred to as BJSCK07) have reconstructed the history of terrigenous inputs into the Lake Malawi by measuring the elemental Zr:Ti ratio on lake sediments with an XRF scanner. The resulting record is the first in continental tropical Africa that unambiguously shows the centennial to millennial climatic variability, so-called Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O), generally found in the Northern Hemisphere high-latitudes during the last glacial period. Strikingly, the...

To assess the effectiveness of impregnated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying and larval control relative to the impacts of climate variability in the decline of malaria cases in Eritrea.Monthly data on clinical malaria cases by subzoba (district) in three zobas (zones) of Eritrea for 1998-2003 were used in Poisson regression models to determine whether there is statistical evidence for reduction in cases by DDT, malathion, impregnated nets and larval control used over the period, while...

Objectives: To investigate whether the prevalence of HIV infection among young people, and sexual behaviours associated with increased HIV risk, are differentially distributed between students and those not attending school or college.Design: A random population sample of unmarried young people (916 males, 1003 females) aged 14-25 years from rural South Africa in 2001.Methods: Data on school attendance and HIV risk characteristics came from structured face-to-face interviews.HIV serostatus...
