This article synthesizes selected historical, philosophical, and empirical research of Asa G. Hilliard, III and discusses theoretical linkages between that body of research and empirical studies of learning and development among African American youth in the field of Black psychology.

Abstract Heart rate was measured in 79 young male soccer players during training in the third week of Ramadan. Forty-eight players were practising Ramadan fasting, while the other 31 players were eating normally. All participants trained for 60–80 min at an ambient temperature of 25–28°C and relative humidity of 50–53%. Heart rate, which was measured throughout the training session, was marginally higher in the fasting (mean 144 beats · min−1, s = 25) than in the non-fasting (139 beats ·...

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal legislation has dramatically changed the way schools and school districts measure educational attainment for all students. In this article, the researchers examine whether African Americans have progressed or digressed in their educational attainment five years after the implementation of NCLB. To provide a clear picture on the status of educational attainment for African American K?12 public school students across the United States, an analysis of...

This paper discusses the underlying causal mechanisms that enabled or constrained institutionalisation of environmental education in 12 institutions in eight countries in southern Africa. The study was carried out in the context of the Southern Africa Development Community Regional Environmental Education Support Programme’s Course Development Network (CDN). This paper reports on part of the author's doctoral study and draws on critical realism as the ontological lens. Data analysis was done...

Abstract Electron microprobe analyses are presented for fluorapatite phenocrysts from a benmoreite-peralkaline rhyolite volcanic suite from the Kenya Rift Valley. The rocks have previously been well characterized petrographically and their crystallization conditions are reasonably well known. The REE contents in the M site increase towards the rhyolites, with a maximum britholite component of ~35 mol.%. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are rather flat between La and Sm and then decrease...

The HIV/AIDS epidemic and its disproportionate effect on the lives of young people has been a source of major concern in South Africa. Research has, until now, focussed on the broad cultural determinants of risky sexual behaviour among this group and on the barriers that impede the promotion of health seeking behaviour in the context of HIV/AIDS. Still missing is a dedicated investigation into the role of traditional rites of passage customs in influencing the sexual behaviour of young...

Email: mariotti@ictp.it , coppolae@ictp.it ABSTRACT Results are presented from regional climate model experiments over the African region. Simulated present day climate (1990 to 2007) is examined and compared to climate projections for the 1990 to 2007 period. The model used is the resident regional climate model at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics referred to as RegCM. Horizontal resolution was fixed at 50km as an optimal compromise between computing power and model...

Abstract Competitive Muslim athletes often have to train and compete during the holy month of Ramadan when they abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. In this study, we investigated the effect of Ramadan fasting on some biochemical and haematological parameters in 78 Tunisian junior male soccer players aged 16–19 years who continued their usual schedule of daily training and weekly competition. The study population was divided into four groups based on the time of day of...

There is convincing evidence linking school feeding to improved educational outcomes. The Primary School Nutrition Programme (PSNP) was first implemented in 1994 and aimed to improve educational outcomes by alleviating short-term hunger and improving school attendance and punctuality. Responsibility for the programme was transferred from the Department of Health (DoH) to the Department of Education (DoE) in 2004 and the name was changed to the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) at...

Abstract Using the 1993 South Africa Integrated Household Survey, this paper studies the effect that mother's education through the knowledge channel has on children's health using height for age Z‐scores as health measure. Under a two‐stage least square methodology we find that an increase in 4 years on mother's education (approximately 1 standard deviation) will lead to an increase of 0.6 standard deviations on her child's height for age Z‐score. We also find, as the medical literature...

Predicted future warming in equatorial Africa, accompanied by greater evaporation and frequent heavy precipitation events, is expected to have substantial but uncertain impacts on terrestrial hydrology. Current low-resolution (~250km) General Circulation Models (GCM) are of limited use to regional and local-scale decision support systems for climate change impacts. Quantitative analyses of the impact of climate change at the local scale requires the improved representation of land-surface...

Pharyngotonsilitis in one of the most common respiratory diseases in the community among childhood. Nearly 28% - 40% are estimated to be caused by GAβHS which is considered the most important etiological pathogen in the terms of complications. Objectives: To study the epidemiology and to determine the clinical predictors of GAβHS pharyngitis. Methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted over a period of one year where primary and preparatory school children (600) attending school health...

One of the aims of the Botswana education since independence was to improve the primary level as a foundation of the whole education system. As a result, the Government of Botswana, in collaboration with other partners the world over, engaged in the mammoth task of improving the primary education sector. One such endeavour was the establishment of the Department of Primary Education in 1991 with the main aim of improving primary education in any way possible. However, since its inception in...
