Twenty-four of 63 enteric Gram-negative organisms (38.1%) which were isolated from 35 apparently healthy Nigerian students were found to have low trimethoprim resistance (MIC less than 1000 mg/l). These isolates were also found to be resistant to several other antibiotics and trimethoprim resistance was found to be transferable from 15 (62.5%) of the trimethoprim resistant organisms into E. coli EC 1005. It is likely that the high percentage of trimethoprim resistance encountered in this...

The recent national heightened interest in drug abuse, involving social campaigns by political leaders, has provided an opportune time for interested workers to articulate and advocate a drug and alcohol education programme. Education in this case means the intentional giving of assistance or advice (by an educator or change agent) in a process of decision making on the use of alcohol and drugs. It should be integrated into the school curriculum, be multidisciplinary in approach, and in...

Unknown in 1980, suspected in 1983 and scarcely present in 1984-85, Plasmodium falciparum resistance to chloroquine as studied in vivo in schoolchildren in Gabon, has strongly developed in 4 years time. In 1987-88, administration of 25 mg/kg of chloroquine leaves one strain out of four with a parasitic load greater than 10/1.000 red blood cells examined by thick drop technique. The present, unfortunately provisional attitude tends to maintain chloroquine at efficient doses for as long as the...

Basic nursing education in South Africa has recently changed from a series of single registrations to a 4 year integrated programme. Diploma nursing education has also been moved into the mainstream of post-secondary education by the establishment of Nursing Colleges affiliated to Universities. These structural changes have put nursing education on a healthy footing, which should serve it well for the next decade.

This paper reviews studies published since 1980 on factors affecting the participation of females in formal education. The aim is to identify factors, summarize strategies and suggest policies that could improve female education in sub - Saharan Africa. Markedly different patterns of enrollment are evident from country to country. Countries with both low and high levels of enrollment showed evidence of both equitable and inequitable female participation. Background characteristics such as...

This study of Form Three (ninth grade) students in Nigeria indicates that single sex schools improve girls'achievement in mathematics and engender less stereotypic ideas about mathematics. But Nigerian males experience lower achievement and hold a more stereotypic view of mathematics under single sex schooling. Why are there different responses? In part, differences between the types of students attending single-sex and coeducational schools may be responsible. Girls'schools also differed...

Despite considerable progress by Middle Eastern and North African countries in improving female access to and attainment of education at all levels, much remains to be done. This report focuses on three sets of highly interrelated determinants of access, achievement and outcome : 1) macrolevel societal determinants; 2) school characteristics; and 3) family background characteristics. Seven representative countries were included : Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and...

Since 1973/74. vast strides have been made to democratize education and increase regional participation rates in primary education .Despite the efforts made however. disparities have widened and widened in a zonal nature. denoting the geographicaly distinct areas of north and south. The factors that underlie the problem seem to be distribution of missionary schools, economic differences in the regions and lack of stability in some of the northern regions. Whereas regional disparities in...

Long‐period teleseismic P and S waveforms for the largest four earthquakes in the Serdo sequence are compared with synthetic seismograms to infer mechanisms, focal depths, source time functions, and dynamic energy release. For all four events studied, the mechanisms are predominantly strike slip. Depth estimates obtained for the four earthquakes by matching synthetic seismograms to the observations are found to lie between 5 and 8 km. The azimuthal variation of observed body wave duration...
