Abstract Patient education is a major part of diabetes treatment, and ideally it should encourage self‐management. This paper explores the introduction of such a system to a remote area of rural South Africa, with high levels of poverty and illiteracy. Empowerment‐based education needs to take into account existing health beliefs, perceived locus of control, and potential barriers to self‐care. Using these principles, as well as awareness of traditional forms of treatment and close community...

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer for the general population as well as for African Americans. It is known that a healthy diet and exercise can reduce the risk for coronary heart diseases. We hypothesize that nutrition education on healthy diets and emphasis on increased physical activity would help African Americans to reduce their risks for CVD. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a nutrition education program (the Tuskegee University Nutrition Outreach Program)...

There are few data on the prevalence of riboflavin deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa, and it remains unclear whether riboflavin status influences the risk for anaemia. The aims of this study were to: (1) measure the prevalence of riboflavin deficiency in children in south-central Côte d'Ivoire; (2) estimate the riboflavin content of the local diet; and (3) determine if riboflavin deficiency predicts anaemia and/or iron deficiency. In 5- to 15-year-old children ( n 281), height, weight,...

A two year study investigating the state of pre-service teachers’ (PTs’) (n=224), teachers’ (n=18) and students’ knowledge (n=123) of Grade 7 geometry (using the van Hiele theory (1986) and acquisition scales of Gutierrez, Jaime & Fortuny (1991)) is reported. Results indicate that both teachers and PTs fail to reach the expected level of geometric thinking and degree of acquisition. The article focuses on the role of higher education in generating or mitigating inequality among ethno-regional groups and its impact on ethnic relations with evidence from Nigeria. It shows that access to education in Nigeria has been politicised. This is because of the perceived role of education in engendering political and socio-economic inequalities. It assesses the intervention mechanisms of successive Nigerian governments at federal and state levels to expand access to and enhance...
