The identification of early risk factors among undergraduate students that impact on health, both mental and physical is a primary focus of this survey. The international recruitment by countries of the North of teachers from less developed countries has become a controversial aspect of the problem of 'brain drain'. As a political and economic issue, the argument is that it reduces human capital within the education system and leads to the movement of highly skilled teachers from countries that can least afford to lose them. In South Africa the issue of teacher mobility is more complex because opinion is divided on the extent of the problem,...

In order to enhance education supply, many countries have launched large teacher recruitment programmes in recent years, whereby teachers are no longer engaged on civil servant positions, but on the basis of (fixed term) contracts typically implying considerably lower salaries and a sharply reduced duration of professional training. The question of assessment standards has been at the centre of debate at many regional and international conferences on education. The debates are a result of new education initiatives and call for increased accountability. Expectations about what all students should learn - and, by implication, what they should be tested on - have changed in response to social, economic and technological changes and as a result of the standards-based reform movement. This has intensified the demand for...
