Iron deficiency (ID) is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency in the world, particularly in developing countries. Blood samples and a qualitative FFQ on Fe- and vitamin C-rich foods were obtained in 180 adolescent girls aged 12 to 17 years living in two boarding schools from south Benin. ID, defined as serum ferritin either 73 micromol/l or transferrin saturation<20%, was found in 32% of subjects. Anaemia (Hb<120 g/l) was found in 51% of adolescents, while 24% suffered from...

The process of education and learning from experience is a whole-life process. Nwagwu 1976 sees education as a powerful instrument designed for human improvement and to prepare people for work and life. Fafunwa 1982 believes that African education is traditionally multilateral and that the end objective is to produce an individual who is honest, responsible, skilled, cooperative, and self-reliant. This is only achievable if the universities are properly equipped and adequately funded. In...

Agriculture in southern Africa is predicted to be particularly severely affected by climate change, and hence is considered a priority area for creating an enabling environment for adaptation. The study presented here, based in the arid Suid Bokkeveld region of South Africa, aims to increase the resilience of small-scale tea farmers in responding to climate change, using as a starting point existing local adaptive capacity, while recognising the utility of external knowledge such as climate...

An earthquake swarm struck the North Tanzania Divergence, East African Rift over a 2 month period between July and September 2007. It produced approximately 70 M > 4 earthquakes (peak magnitude Mw 5.9), and extensive surface deformation, concurrent with eruptions at the nearby Oldoinyo Lengai volcano. The spatial and temporal evolution of the entire deformation event was resolved by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations, owing to a particularly favorable acquisition...

Traditionally seen as an environmental and an energy issue, climate change is now also being cast as a threat to international peace and security. Africa, though the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, is seen as the continent most likely to suffer its worst consequences -a function of the continents reliance on climate-dependent sectors (such as rain-fed agriculture) and its history of resource, ethnic and political conflict. There have been some attempts to construct scenarios...

This paper investigates the factors that affect the use of mobile internet among the South African students. This is done by using the uses and gratifications (U&G) framework to understand the motivations and extract the intrinsic needs of mobile phone users. Drawing on previous studies on the mobile phone and traditional internet, a model has been developed highlighting the proposed U&Gs. This model was then validated with data gathered through interviews conducted with university students....
