This paper reports on the ideas held by primary school teacher trainees on some concepts about air and air pressure. The teacher trainees at several training institutions were asked to complete a questionnaire designed to establish their ideas before instruction on the topic. Many of the ideas they held were found to be similar to those found in younger people in previous research carried out in developed countries.

Using a conceptual framework derived from the triparadigmatic approach of Habermas, this paper explores the ‘practical’ dimension of classroom interactions in Botswana junior secondary schools. Ethnographic data are used to illustrate the multiple facets of the ‘practical’ curriculum-in-action. The prevalence of a technical orientation to the ‘practical’ is discussed in terms of teacher coping strategies.

Nigerian high school athletes (112 high and 90 low in performance) and 108 nonathletes were administered the Tennessee Self-concept Scale. Athletes scored significantly higher on all self-concept subscales except behavior, moral-ethical and family. Better athletes scored significantly higher on all aspects of self-concept: social, moral-ethical, family and behavior, as is consistent with findings from the USA and other countries.

The 1600 km long Cameroon volcanic line is composed of large polygenetic volcanoes and small monogenetic volcanoes. The latter conform monogenetic volcano groups consisting of small lava flows, cinder cones and maars. Chemical analyses on basalts from the central part of the Cameroon volcanic line showed that CaO contents of the basalts of polygenetic volcanoes are higher than those of monogenetic volcanoes, while the reverse relation is found for SiO2 contents.
