The decision to undertake this research was a response to the debates which followed the introduction of a new secondary education system in Nigeria. A vision survey of professional motor vehicle drivers in Oyo State, Nigeria, showed that ocular trauma, ocular infections and inflammation were the most important causes of visual impairment. Self-medication was very common with the drivers and must have contributed considerably to ocular morbidity.
