If we all suffer and survive among those marginalized, as some readers of this piece may want to say, then my response to that is that AfricanAmericans do so differently. Caucasian women are in need of positive reinforcement as are those of the underclass and the non-traditional older student. So are Asians and Hispanics and Native Americans. I am not arguing this point. But with African-American students, there are many differences that do not, generally, apply to others. A case in point...

This is a study of parental attitudes to schooling for girls (compared to boys) at the Primary and secondary level. The study was limited to three districts in Malawi: Mulanje, Mangochi, and Lilongwe. Volcanic ash soils of the Great Rift Valley of Africa and east Java, Indonesia, are highly fertile due to an ample supply of available phosphorus. The origin of the natural phosphates has been determined from oxygen isotope analyses (δ18O) which reflect the formation temperature of the PO bond. The δ18O values of phosphates extracted from fourteen surface, or near-surface, soil samples ranges from + 10.1 to +24.8‰. The values are higher than those of recent volcanic ashes from Oldoinyo...

Highlights problems of training and personnel development in the context of inadequate training facilities, and inadequately defined skills resulting in failure on the part of the professional to meet the needs of users. Covers the key attributes and attitudes required for the identification of skills in the context of African librarianship in general, and that of Tanzania in particular. Stresses the need for a concrete and appropriate training and personnel development programme.

Impaired coronary reserve and increased minimal coronary resistance have been documented in several animal models of left ventricular hypertrophy. There is controversy whether the increased minimal coronary resistance is due to vascular or extravascular causes. To test the hypothesis that pressure-overloaded left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with a vascular defect, studies were performed using isolated buffer-perfused guinea pig hearts taken 72 ±6 days post-aortic banding (L...

Addresses the purposes of school libraries by pinpointing their emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits for young learners. Discusses their requirements by considering typical organizational deficiencies and situations in Africa, particularly Kenya. Abstract The training of black teachers in South Africa has greatly expanded in recent decades. The expansion resulted from a strong demand for teachers in black schools and from an even stronger and greatly unrealistic demand for places in teacher training colleges. The demand for teachers developed as a result of growing enrolment and an attempt to lower the pupil‐teacher ratios. The demand for places in teacher training colleges in turn developed only partly as a result of the demand for...

The 3-D P-wave and S-wave velocity structure in the upper crust beneath the Lake Bogoria region of the Kenya Rift Valley is obtained by the simultaneous inversion of local earthquake arrival-time data for velocity and hypocentral parameters. The data were obtained from seismograms recorded by the KRISP85 (Kenya Rift International Seismic Project 1985) Lake Bogoria earthquake network and inverted using a modified version of Thurber's 3-D iterative simultaneous inversion program. The results...

A study was done of the experiences of Black South Africans who came to the United States for education and training. The research studied 140 individuals who participated in two programs between 1980 and 1991. Data were collected from the student files and from standard university data from Profiles of American Colleges by Barron's Educational Series. The study focused on three outcomes: personal and academic satisfaction and academic achievement. The results indicated that, in general,...

According to the demographic transition theory and the wealth flows model, it is expected that fertility will decline with socioeconomic development, manifested in part through increasingly greater proportions of the population with formal education. Since their independence in the 1960s, most sub-Saharan African nations have experienced rapid changes in educational levels. However, recent estimates indicate that high levels of fertility are being maintained as reflected in the high rates of...

This study examines AIDS awareness, knowledge of transmission and prevention among students, who not only belong to the sexually active age bracket, but who are the future leaders of the nation. The student population was stratified into those in the health and non-health disciplines and an accidental sampling technique was used to obtain the respondents from the 2 strata. 60 students were interviewed from each stratum. A majority of the medical students, 58.3% as against 48.3% of the...

Black students' participation in higher education has experienced periods of growth and decline. The recent resurgence and proliferation of racial incidents on college campuses, coupled with a floundering economy, signals a need to place this issue at the forefront of our educational agenda once again. In this article, Walter R. Allen presents the results of a quantitative study on the differences in the college experience between Black undergraduates who attended historically Black colleges...
