Continental rifts are segmented along their lengths into 50 to 100 km‐long extensional basins, suggesting a genetic relationship with regularly segmented oceanic rifts. To investigate the spatial and temporal development of along‐axis segmentation in youthful continental rifts, field, remote sensing, and K‐Ar geochronology studies were conducted in four Western rift (East Africa) basins. Volcanism within the Rungwe region began in late Miocene time prior to or concurrent with the development...

A study was carried out to delineate the use of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for gastro-enteritis in a unit that had previously used intravenous therapy (IVT) almost exclusively. Most children with dehydrating gastro-enteritis who were 5% or less dehydrated received ORT initially, while those who were more severely affected were given IVT. The success rate using ORT alone was 73%, which was much lower than that achieved in other studies. Possible factors associated with this poor outcome...

The relevance of integrating traditional African healing and Western counselling in psychological practice in South Africa is debated from both functional and sociopolitical perspectives. Within a description of traditional beliefs, customs and healing practices, conflicts experienced by people in a state of cultural transition are outlined. Three school psychology case studies are presented as illustrative of such conflicts and of the relative efficacy of integrated intervention in the resolution of these sorts of problem.

Advertising or promotion comprises two aspects: the advertising message and the advertising medium. This paper is an attempt to see whether lofty ideals of sound education are being achieved in primary education since music is a sine qua non. Since Independence in 1980 there has been a massive expansion at all levels of the education system in Zimbabwe; the objective of universal primary education has already been achieved but critics have questioned the efficiency of the system. Although Zimbabwe has an outstanding record of cost-sharing sin Education, the State’s recurrent expenditure for the sector has been increasing. Since 1982 the slowdown in economic growth in Zimbabwe, the burden of foreign debt servicing, and an...

Abstract Coda Q , Qc , has been determined in the Mount Cameroon volcanic region, West Africa, from the decay of the amplitudes of coda waves on narrow band-pass-filtered seismograms of local microearthquakes in the frequency range 1.5 to 24 Hz. Qc averages about 121 and 1745 at 1.5 Hz and 24 Hz, respectively, and has a frequency dependence of the form Qc = 65f. For each frequency band, the coda Q values, averaged over all the earthquakes, show an insensitivity to the compoment of the ground...
