In Tanzania, the earth sciences are only taught at the University of Dar es Salaam, in the Department of Geology. The Department was founded in 1974, acquired its first Tanzanian staff in 1975 and produced its first graduates in 1977. Now the Department is completely run by Tanzanian staff and about 25 Geology students graduate annually. The Department offers B.Sc., M.Sc. (taught and by research) and Ph.D. degrees. Students enter the University after 13 years of schooling, thus, upon...

This study of a school choice plan in St Louis, Missouri - which allowed black students to attend suburban schools - reveals the ugliness and beauty of race relations. It describes the resistance of suburban white educators and the courage of the black students who crossed the colour line.

Four nutritionally impaired strains of Mycobacterium bovis produced by illegitimate recombination were tested for their ability to protect guinea pigs against intratracheal challenge with virulent M. bovis. All four strains and M. bovis BCG induced significant levels of protection as measured by the reduced spread of infection to the spleen and liver. In animals vaccinated with BCG or two of the other strains, the bacterial counts from the lungs were significantly lower than those of the nonvaccinated animals.

Malaria control in Africa relies primarily on early effective treatment for clinical disease, but most early treatments for fever occur through self-medication with shop-bought drugs. Lack of information to community members on over-the-counter drug use has led to widespread ineffective treatment of fevers, increased risks of drug toxicity and accelerating drug resistance. We examined the feasibility and measured the likely impact of training shop keepers in rural Africa on community drug...

The research investigates the ways in which the needs of a particular translation teaching-situation are provided for. The argument runs against the general practice where a translation model is independently adopted and is thought to provide the teacher with the necessary methodological and pedagogical background. The study demonstrates that active interaction rather than the passive reception from the teacher within the existing models is essential. This is possible in the light of a...

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract has a multitude of roles including ingestion; digestion of food; absorption of nutrients and water; elimination of waste; and defense against toxins, antigens, and pathogens. To meet these challenges, there is an elaborate sensory system, with distinct chemo- and mechanosensory modalities, that monitors the various processes along the GI tract, providing feedback and maintaining physiological function. This chapter will focus on physiological and...

Mining in Zambia has been practised for centuries, and in the last 70 years Zambia has risen to become one of the world's leading Cu producers as a result of the exploitation of the Zambian Copperbelt orebodies. In contrast to this long history of mining, Zambia has a relatively short history of Earth Science Education. For the past 24 years, the earth sciences have been taught within the School of Mines in University of Zambia. The School started operation on 1st June, 1973, with the...

There are three stage of music education in traditional Africa. The first stage inducts a new born baby into feeling the sensations of musical pulse and sound as a sympathetic participant till the age of about two years. The second stage focuses on inculcating the sense of rhythm from the ages of about two to eight years. The third stage is music education for life; and starts from the age of eight, by which time gifted children could be recruited into adult groups. Specialists emerge on...

The recruitment and retention of African Americans in graduate schools remains a significant problem. Statistics anxiety has been found to be prevalent among graduate students, being implicated both as a barrier to success in quantitative courses and a barrier to completion of theses and dissertations. To date, it is unclear whether African American graduate students experience higher levels of statistics anxiety. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare levels of statistics anxiety...

The University of Nairobi is currently the only University in Kenya which offers degree level courses in the earth sciences. The Department was founded in 1961, became part of an autonomous University in 1970, awarded its first degrees in 1972 and awarded its first Geology degrees in 1978. The Department currently offers a four-year B.Sc. course - delivered as part of a course unit system - and an M.Sc. programme in Geology. Students are admitted to the University after eight years of...

Implicit in the African Renaissance is the synergy between government, the private sector, the educated minority and the disadvantaged majority. For this concept to work, belief and commitment must arise first from the African individual, whatever his or her potential contribution may be. The geosciences in South Africa provide a currently vibrant example of such cooperation, which has the potential to contribute significantly to the upliftment of the country and its neighbouring states....

The concept of joint implementation as a way to implement climate change mitigation projects in another country has been controversial ever since its inception. Developing countries have raised numerous issues at the project-specific technical level and broader concerns having to do with equity and burden sharing. This paper summarizes the findings of studies for Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa, four countries that have large greenhouse gas emissions and are heavily engaged in the...

323 Important to designing optimal mycophenolate mofetil(MMF) dosing in individual renal transplant patients(RTP) is knowing if there are significant effects of ethnicity on mycophenolic acid(MPA) pharmacokinetics(PK). Thus we evaluated the following in 20 caucasian(Cau) and 13 African-American(AA) RTP: 2hr MPA AUC which correlates well to the 12 hr AUC (HaleM, Cost B1 Medicine 1997, pp229-35), MPA free fraction (MPAff), free MPA AUC2(fMPA AUC2) and pre-dose concentrations of MPA glucuronide...

Gender courses and women’s studies departments have proliferated in South African tertiary institutions over the past decade (Bonnin, 1995). These developments tie in with changes in the constitution of the country as well as the ‘almost worldwide emergence of women’s studies as a field of research, teaching and study’ (Mama, 1996: 2). A focus on gender and the inclusion of such debates in the curriculum is relatively new in South African psychology, which has been historically dominated by...
