Droughts and floods are a capricious part of life for many Malawians. The country depends heavily on rain-fed agriculture and so it is crucial that we understand the implications of these climate events. Not only are rural livelihoods affected, but urban households are also vulnerable to food shortages and rising prices. Finding ways to overcome the losses from droughts and floods is a policy imperative.

All age, sex, and racial groups are affected by the obesity epidemic in the United States, although disparities exist among these groups. The Seventh-day Adventists are a religious group of people who are believed to live longer and healthier lives than do their non-Adventist counterparts because they do not smoke or drink alcohol and they eat a healthier diet. This study assessed the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Seventh-day Adventist college students attending 2 private...

Either as a silent provider of a service or conscious protestor, the post compulsory institutions responsible for teaching and learning in South Africa have–in the apartheid era–been agents of government control, and as Welsh suggests (Welsh D. 1977) schools, colleges and Universities, were far from being in a position of academic neutrality. It may be argued that, in general, University development mirrored rather than initiated the divisions in South African society. It was nevertheless...

Abstract My interest in critical leaderful educational practices emanated from my experiences as a researcher in a South African National Department of Education project that piloted the White Paper on Inclusive Education Policy from 2001–2003 and in 2006 when I worked as a volunteer consultant with Twenty30, an independent, not for profit organization that works with schools in disadvantaged communities in Johannesburg, South Africa. Based on my work with the National Department of...

This paper places under scrutiny the processes and key issues involved in presenting African musics as an academic discipline within a South African university setting. While I draw from others who have done seminal work in this regard, such as J.H. Kwabena Nketia, this case study constitutes a body of personal reflections gained during my own attempts of teaching African musics within the various South African universities where I was employed for over more than three decades. Specific...

Adjustment to the university environment is regarded as an important factor in predicting university outcomes. This study explores the pathways taken by adjustment and other psychosocial variables (help‐seeking, academic motivation, self‐esteem, perceived stress, and perceived academic overload), in relation to the success of economically and educationally disadvantaged students at university. Participants were 194 first‐year students on need‐based financial aid at a South African...

The St. Lucia Estuary is Africa's largest estuarine system. It is a major component of the iSimangaliso (formerly Greater St. Lucia) Wetland Park, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. The system has been severely affected by drought conditions which have culminated in the mouth of the system being cut off from the Indian Ocean since June 2002, for a period of almost five years. This study aimed to document the dynamics of meiofauna of the system during a drought phase, since (1)...

The goal of the study was to explore the value that psychology students accredit to psychological research in a country like Botswana where psychology is a relatively new discipline. Forty-five undergraduate students belonging to the first cohort of psychology students at the University of Botswana participated in the study (males = 7, females = 38, age range 18–23 years). Data were obtained from student essays and evaluated with Qualitative Content Analysis. Students were of the view that...

Non-profit organisations across the globe are very aware ofthe challenges they face: an increase in the number ofcharities, a lack offunding, a lack ofvolunteers and a changing donor-market. With donations declining as donors get older, charitable marketers need to turn their attention to a younger generation. This paper attempts to provide some insight into the supporting behaviour (through donations and volunteering) of Generation Y students at a South African University and measures their...
