Climate change will have significant impacts on agriculture, particularly in East Africa where there is such variation in topography and climate. Modelling studies can help to show where these impacts may be largest, to help guide adaptations to ensure food security in the coming decades. Results suggest that crop yield reductions may be expected over 50% to 70% of the area simulated. At the same time, highland areas in parts of the region may see increases in yield potential, which could...

Paleo-environmental records and models indicate that the African Humid Period (AHPabruptly ended about 5000-4000 years before present (BP). Some proxies indicate alsan abrupt onset of the AHP between 14,000 and 11,000 BP. How important are local orbitaforcing, ice-sheet forcing, greenhouse gas forcing, and the reorganization of the AtlantiMeridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) for changes in the African Monsoon/vegetatiosystem? Here we use transient simulations with climate-vegetation...

The Republic of Cameroon has three ministries of education - the Ministries of Basic, Secondary, and Higher Education. The encouragement of education at each of these levels is a national priority as reflected in existing legislation and annual budgetary allocations relative to other ministries. For example, basic and secondary education ranked first and third, relative to other ministries, in terms of budgetary allocation for the 2006 fiscal year. Institutional management at each level of...

Hereditary nonsyndromic hearing impairment (HI) is extremely heterogeneous. Mutations of the transmembrane channel-like gene 1 (TMC1) have been shown to cause autosomal dominant and recessive forms of nonsyndromic HI linked to the loci DFNA36 and DFNB7/B11, respectively. TMC1 is 1 member of a family of 8 genes encoding transmembrane proteins. In the mouse, MmTmc1 and MmTmc2 are...

In keeping with a strong mentorship ethic exhibited by scholars in such disciplines as Near Eastern studies, Afroasiatic studies, ancient languages, and Semitic languages (for example, the SASNES colloquium and MA Prize), this article considers some matters pertaining to changes in assessment in the South African higher education system and how this may affect the status quo of teaching in our related disciplines. Matters of paramount importance to be touched upon are the management of: a)...

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to look into the problematic of African American education. To be able to understand the situation today, I had to thoroughly investigate the history from the very start when people from Africa were brought to the New World. White plantation owners suffered from lack of men power. There was no one who would harvest the crop. Landowners were loosing money so they came up with the idea to import people from Africa solely for the purpose of work. Masters...

p to 50% of disabilities in developing countries are as a result of potentially preventable illness or injuries. In Africa it is estimated that at least 81 million people are affected by some form of disability. Different surveys carried out suggest that the major causes include malnutrition, chronic disease, war and civil conflicts, other injuries and congenital diseases. Physical disabilities (e.g. cerebral palsy, polio, amputations) and blindness predominate. Only a small proportion of...
