Climate variability and climate change affect groundwater resources through changes in the timing and magnitude of recharge, the interaction between groundwater and surface waters, and water withdrawals. Evaluation of these impacts is essential for long-term water resource management, especially in semi-arid regions where the availability of resources is often the key to economic development. In Senegal, hypersalinity occurs upstream in tidal estuaries with salinisation of groundwater in...

In the present study, the 2006 Machaze earthquake (Mw7.0) and the 2006 Lacerda earthquake (Mw5.6) in Mozambique are relocated. The main purpose of the relocation is to determine fault planes related to those earthquakes. The result of the relocation of the Machaze earthquake indicates that the strike and dip of the fault plane is about 172° and 65° westward, respectively, and it represents a normal faulting. Analysis of the Lacerda cluster suggests that this is an earthquake swarm. The fault...

Completing additional years of education necessarily entails spending more time in school. There is naturally a rather mechanical effect of schooling on fertility if women tend not to have children while continuing to attend high school or college, thus delaying the beginning of and shortening their reproductive life. This paper uses data from the Kenyan Demographic and Health Surveys of 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2003 to uncover the impact of staying one more year in school on teenage fertility....

This study analysed the acoustic and vestibular functional and morphological modifications in guinea pigs after acoustic trauma. Animals were exposed to noise (6 kHz, at 120 dB SPL for 60 minutes) and then auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) were measured at 6 hours, 1 day, 3, 7, and 21 days after noise. Western blotting and immunostaining for 4-hydroxy-2-noneal (4-HNE) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were performed in the cochlear and vestibular...

After more than two decades of conflict and instability in Northern Uganda, there is finally relative peace. Now is the time of post-armed conflict transformation. The establishment of peace during this time will determine the direction of much of Uganda. Because youth were greatly affected by the conflict, they are particularly important to building a “culture of peace” (Interview with Mapenduzi, 18/4/2009). This study aims to explore the broad mechanisms of peace education and the role of...

This study aimed to investigate the differences in functional impairment as experienced by school-aged South African children diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These two disorders often occur co-morbidly and are frequently confused by teachers and parents, and therefore this study aimed to contribute to disentangling the two by identifying the specific functional impairment associated with each. Furthermore, this study...
