This study examined the gander issue in the performance of students admitted through UME and pre-degree into the Nigerian Universities. Ex-post facto design of descriptive research was adopted for the study. A proforma was used to collect data from a sample of two hundred and fifty students from the faculties of Science in the Nigerian Universities. Purposive, stratified and proportional sampling techniques were employed in the selection of the sample. Data collected were analyzed using...

Abstract This article presents a linguistic analysis of data from an ongoing research project exploring HIV/AIDS education in West African Burkina Faso. I argue that we can identify different, sometimes even competing, discourses about the disease in prevention interactions. Thus, communication about HIV/AIDS in Burkina Faso—and probably in most of the Sub-Saharan countries—might be characterized by what I will call, with reference to Bakhtin, discursive heteroglossia. There is clear...

The most lucrative resources for sustainable technological, economic, social and personal development are human resources. Nations are advanced to the extent that they have been able to develop in every area of human potential the resources of every citizen. But in some societies such development is limited by stereotypic biases against certain groups in the society and against some areas of human potential. For example, by stereotyping home economics as female-only subject, males accept the...

The ever-changing digital environment has had significant impact on the scope and nature of reference work. The question explored in this article is whether the necessary skills for efficient digital reference librarianship are being taught in library schools. For students to become effective practitioners in the digital environment they need not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience in the application of digital reference technology. This article provides an overview of a...

In trypanosomes, the thioredoxin-type protein TXN (tryparedoxin) is a multi-purpose oxidoreductase that is involved in the detoxification of hydroperoxides, the synthesis of DNA precursors and the replication of the kinetoplastid DNA. African trypanosomes possess two isoforms that are localized in the cytosol and in the mitochondrion of the parasites respectively. Here we report on the biological significance of the cTXN (cytosolic TXN) of Trypanosoma brucei for hydroperoxide detoxification....

This article aims to provide insight into the experiences of Chinese international students in some South African tertiary institutions. The study investigates their successes and failures in endeavouring to learn English and the culture shock and 'learning shock' they endure when registering to study in an African country with an essentially European-based tertiary education system. The current state of English learning and teaching in China is compared with that of South Africa, as is the...

The National Plan for Higher Education in South Africa (NPHE) (2001) identifies access as one of the priorities for the transformation of higher education. Consequently, several structural adjustments, policy shifts and enabling mechanisms have been put in place to enhance the efficiency of universities that will eventual lead to access for success. By focussing on multiple views and perspectives in relation to access, this article explores the extent to which access as a policy initiative...

This article will first provide a theoretical overview of the problems that learners experience in distance education. It will also deal with some of the implications for course design. Problems associated with study through a distance education institution include loneliness, time management, examination skills and the format of the study material. Some distance education learners also struggle to adapt to a situation in which the role of the academic has changed from lecturer to...

Abstract Climate simulations from ECHAM4/OPYC3 (IS92a scenario) and ECHAM5/MPI‐OM1 (SRES A1B scenario) are analysed regarding their precipitation change signal in southern Morocco at the border of the Saharan desert. Results are obtained from statistical‐dynamical downscaling, using circulation weather types (CWTs) as driving fields. The trends obtained from the two climate models between their respective control (1969–1989) and scenario (2060–2089) periods are added to climatology obtained...

Findings centered principally on the intensely relational qualities associated with leadership and leading, mentoring and supervising, and the off-campus nature of most sources for professional support and validation. Tenets of Black feminist thought (Collins, 2000)...

It has been stated that high prevalence of microfilaria in Africa has compounded the problem of blood shortage in our blood banks as prospective blood donors positive for microfilaria are automatically excluded from donation. This fact, together with changing population demographics, increased travels with respect to rural urban migration and the problems of commercial blood donors has made it necessary to determine the prevalence of filarial infection among blood donors in our institution....
