Radar interferometry has proven to be a very suitable, low-cost and accurate tool to measure surface displacements. We investigate several data fusion or time-series analysis strategies which aim to mitigate C-band InSAR restrictions for volcano deformation monitoring applications. The focus is on active African volcanic areas. Firstly, data fusion of C-band ENVISAT/ASAR and L-band ALOS/PALSAR sensors helps the determination of a rifting event sequence that took place in summer 2007 in Lake...

PRMS (Precipitation-Runoff Modelling System) was applied to a river basin in the Main Ethiopian Rift in order to: (1) assess the impact of projected changes in rainfall due to climate change on basin water resources, and (2) to estimate groundwater recharge. Due to variable geological cover and physiography, climate and physical characteristics of the River Meki basin control the amount of water in the rivers and runoff in the basins, which are directly related to effective recharge. Climate...

The study examined air pollution tolerance indices (APTI) of ten plant species around the Erhoike-Kokori oil exploration station of Delta state. Four physiological and biochemical parameters; leaf relative water content (RWC) ascorbic acid content (AA), total leaf chlorophyll (TCh) and leaf extract pH were used to compute the APTI values. The result showed that combining variety of these parameters gave a more reliable result than those of individual parameter. The order of tolerance is as...

While South Africa is well into its second decade of democracy, higher education opportunities in the country remain different for different race groups. Black African learners are not represented in the first-year higher education enrolment profile (the intake of learners who proceed to higher education directly from school) in relation either to their representation in the general population or to their aspirations for entry into higher education. Intended French curriculum objectives refer to four official objectives of teaching and learning French in secondary schools in Kenya as laid down in syllabuses; namely, to equip learners with basic communicative skills, give learners access to oral and written materials, facilitate further studies, and promote global peace (Republic of Kenya, 2002). On the other hand actual curriculum objectives refer to what teachers and students of French perceive to be the objectives of teaching and...

The increase in alcohol and cigarettes use among young people than any population strata is of great concern. The use of alcohol that began in African traditional society as an activity for political, religious, cultural and social relations has evolved over time into a problem of dependence and addiction. Despite concerted prevention efforts, there is still evidence of high prevalence of these drugs among students. As part of the prevention efforts, studies have been conducted to unravel...

This report describes a pilot study of natural risk hazards in the peri-urban extension areas of the Dakar Metropolitan Area, Senegal. The area subject of this study stretches across 580 square kilometers, covering less than 1 percent of the national territory, but housing about 50 percent of Senegal's urban population. Much of the rapid population growth of the Dakar Metropolitan Area is taking place beyond the boundaries of the Department of Dakar (the city center), in...

With increasing use of information and communication technologies in education, students entering university need a basic level of computer proficiency to be able to access course material and complete assignments. At the University of Cape Town (UCT), all new first-year students are required to write an online computer skills test, so that those who lack the necessary skills can be identified and provided with basic training. This paper analyses the results of the computer skills...
