S ummary . This investigation sets out to determine whether scientific concepts which have been previously acquired in one of the languages, English, Swahili or Kikuyu by multilingual Kenyan secondary school students can be transferred to the other two languages. The investigation is based on practical lessons using worksheets translated into the three languages. The results demonstrate that transfer is possible to the vernacular languages from English and between the two vernacular languages.

Female school enrolment in Sierra Leone is consistently and significantly lower than that of boys at all levels of the educational system. Certain traditional beliefs, values and practices discriminate against the education of girls. There is an urgent need to adapt the science curriculum to the needs of girls, by including aspects they can relate to and identify with. Using indigenous technology as a basis for science education is a good way to begin. The use of familiar materials and...

Twenty apparently healthy and normal Nigerian female students, resident at the University of Ibadan campus, were studied for seven consecutive days to assess their food energy intake and energy expenditure during sedentary and physical activities. The mean age (years) of the group was 20.05 (SD 3.44, range 16-29), mean height (m) 1.62 (SD 0.07, range 1.47-1.74) and body-weight (kg) 51.28 (SD 3.21, range 46-58). The food intake of each subject was obtained by direct weighing, and the energy...

The study showed that human schistosomiasis is endemic in the Bo and Tongo Field areas, and the overall prevalence was low. Of the 656 persons examined, 16.3% and 22.3% were positive for Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni respectively from Bo and Tongo Field areas. Children in the age group 1–5 years old had the lowest infection rate, but females in the same age group were more frequently infected than their male counterparts (10.5% v. 4.5% respectively) and the difference was...

This study examined the expectations and attitudes of Indian university students toward boys from father-absent nuclear and extended family systems. The subjects (N = 100) had more positive attitudes towards boys from widowed than from divorced homes for both nuclear and extended family systems. They viewed boys from the extended family more positively than those from the nuclear family. More positive expectations were held for boys from widowed-nuclear versus divorced-nuclear families, with...

A standardized questionnaire, with satisfactory retake item reliabilities and well established validities, was administered to a representative sample of female university students (N = 2366), drawn from Cairo and Ein-Shams Universities, both located in Greater Cairo. Results, relevant to demographic and drug related items, are presented. Where meaningful, comparisons are made with previously published corresponding data obtained on male university students. Among the interesting findings...

Twenty-two cases of histologically-proven genital tuberculosis seen over a nine-year period were reviewed. The main presenting symptoms were infertility, menstrual irregularity and abdominal pain, while the main physical signs were an abdomino-pelvic mass and/or tenderness. Adequate response was observed when the patients were treated with the standard anti-tuberculosis drugs. A high level of suspicion is the sine qua non for a high detection rate of genital tuberculosis.

Clay minerals and humus complexes and their effects on soil chemical properties were studied for five profiles around the Longonot and Susua volcanoes in Kenya. Morphologically, all profiles have some resemblance to Andepts, but there were clear-cut differences in clay contents and mineral composition as well as pH between profiles 1 through 4 and profile 5, which occur under semi-arid to subhumid and under humid climatic conditions, respectively. Profiles 1 through 4 contained embryonic...

Sixteen young adult guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) of mixed sex were used as subjects in a study of food-rewarded operant learning. All but one of the animals learned the required task. Although the general slope of the learning curve was more variable than that of other mammals, neither learning time nor number of rewards to criterion differed significantly from data obtained from other mammals. The results are discussed in terms of an evolutionary model of comparative learning, including...
