The In-Service Basic Education Teacher Diploma Programme (BETD Inset Programme) is a Namibian educational programme under the Ministry of Basic Education, Sport and Culture. It is a unified general preparation for unqualified and partly qualified teachers in Basic Education, with opportunities for specialisation in both phases of schooling and in subject areas. It seeks to strike a balance between professional insight, skills and subject knowledge. A process of evaluation was implemented to...

To evaluate a South African workplace HIV/AIDS peer-education programme running since 1997.In 2001 a cross-sectional study was done of 900 retail-section employees in three geographical areas. The study measured HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, belief about self-risk of infection, and condom use as a practice indicator. The impact of an HIV/AIDS peer-education programme on these outcomes was examined.Training by peer educators had no significant impact on...

Abstract Objective This study was undertaken to establish the prevalence and severity of nutritional problems among low-income children of elementary school age in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in order to collect baseline data to inform policy-makers. Design and methods A cross-sectional survey of children in 14 elementary schools was conducted from January to June, 1998. Nine hundred and nineteen children were measured and interviewed. The planning, design and data...

While it is widely believed that electoral competition influences public spending decisions, there has been relatively little effort to examine how recent democratization in the developing world has resulted in changes in basic service provision. There have been even fewer attempts to investigate whether democracy matters for public spending in the poorest developing countries, where “weak institutions” may mean that the formal adoption of electoral competition has little effect on policy....

The history of pear pruning and training under the hot and dry conditions in South Africa is discussed. Due to the poor soils and the need for irrigation the move towards highdensity plantings occurred with the continued use of the vigorous BP rootstocks. Planting densities have stabilized at ca. 4 x 1.5m (1667 trees/ha). Vigor in these plantings is managed through girdling and the manipulation of branching on young trees. These developments and technologies are discussed.

Chronic diarrhea is one of the major AIDS-defining illnesses in WHO Classification and occurs in 60-90% of HIV-infected patients in Africa. We did a case series study on parasite isolation in stool samples of AIDS patients with chronic diarrhea using wet-mount, Formol-Ether concentration technique and Modified Acid-Fast staining method in Gondar Teaching Hospital between January and September 2000. Seventy AIDS patients with chronic diarrhea were included in the study. Wasting syndrome was...

The mathematics success of African American male adolescents has been given limited attention. Most often, African American males are viewed in terms of their failure as opposed to their success. This tendency to focus almost exclusively on African American failure is a debilitating feature of extant literature and it constrains our understanding of African American mathematics achievement. Malik Williams is one case that stands in opposition to the norm. Realizing the importance of advanced...

Volcanic rock samples collected from 154 sites on the Cameroon Line (CL) have been analysed to study their petromagnetic characteristics. Thermomagnetic experiments and electron microscope observations on the samples indicate that the principal magnetic mineral and carrier of Natural Remanent Magnetisation (NRM) in these rocks is titanomagnetite rich in titanium. These also indicate that the level and stability of magnetisation are dependent on the quantity and composition of the magnetic...

The impact of a mantle plume at the base of the Tanzania craton has modified the composition and seismic velocity of the lithospheric mantle. Lavas erupted by the Labait volcano have sampled the perturbed mantle from the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (>140 km) to the spinel-peridotite domain (<70 km). We have studied the microstructure, texture and seismic anisotropy of a set of xenoliths spanning these depths to investigate the effects of plume activity on the fabric and seismic...

This study quantifies the economic costs of climate change impacts on protected areas in Africa. Downscaled results from four Global Circulation Models (GCMs) are used to classify different ecosystems in accordance with the Holdridge Life Zone (HLZ) system. A benefits transfer approach is then used to place an economic value on the predicted ecosystem shifts resulting from climate change in protected areas. The results provide approximations for the impacts on biodiversity in Africa under...

The Danfa Comprehensive Rural Health and Family Planning Project was a joint effort of the Ghana Medical School, the Ministry of Health, UCLA, and USAID. A health education component was developed as an integral part of program inputs during the initial conceptual phase of the project. As a result non-equivalent experimental and control areas were designated permitting an assessment of program impact during a five-year period (1972-1977) for which baseline and follow-up study data were...

The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of significant hearing impairment in children attending primary school in the country of Zimbabwe.A cross-sectional study of the prevalence of hearing impairment in primary school children was undertaken as part of The Rotary Hearing Health Care Program in Zimbabwe. The sampling unit was primary schools in Manicaland, a province of Zimbabwe. All students in selected schools were screened. In total, 5528 students were screened for...

This report is part of a ProVention Consortium five-country review of lessons learned from recovery after major natural disasters, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of recovery assistance from governments, donors, and civil society after the disasters occurred. Mozambique offers an example of a post-conflict country faced with major natural disasters. It also offers an example of recovery in an extremely poor, and primarily subsistence livelihood population, but in a country favored by...

The rapid increase in adult mortality due to the AIDS epidemic in sub‐Saharan Africa raises great concern about potential intergenerational effects on children. This article estimates the impact of AIDS‐related adult mortality on primary school attendance in rural Kenya using a panel of 1,266 households surveyed in 1997, 2000, and 2002. The article distinguishes between effects on boys’ and girls’ education to understand potential gender differences resulting from adult mortality. We also...

This paper examines dynamic changes in educational quality and equity differences between Black and other population groups in post-Apartheid South African public schools, using the ratio of learners to educators in each school, available from the School Register of Needs, 1996 and 2000. The analysis incorporates school or community-level unobservables and the endogenous movement of learners. This paper shows that (i) the learner–educator ratios significantly differ between formerly Black...

Transcranial vibration was applied for seven animals at a frequency of 250 Hz for 15 min, and five animals were used as normal controls to investigate cellular and molecular mechanism linked to vibration-induced hearing loss in animal model. Compound action potential (CAP) thresholds were measured by round window niche electrode. The expression of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and its receptors (TNF R1, TNF R2), vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGF R1,...

This study investigated African American undergraduate engineering student perceptions of institutional and personal/social campus climate factors to determine bow these perceptions influence their academic experiences and performance. Data collection was accomplished through use of a quantitative and qualitative survey instrument administered to a national sample of subjects. The survey collected data on the subjects' demographic characteristics as well as their perceptions. The study...

Healthy lifestyle and clinical preventive activities have been shown to improve health status of individuals. However routine health promotion and preventive services is limited in medical practice due to time and cost constraint. This study examines how physicians themselves try to promote their own health. Ninety doctors from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu were involved in the study. The result showed that 31.7% of the doctors used seat belt regularly. Only one-fifth...
