Abstract An 8-element small aperture array of about 10 km dimension was deployed at Ngurunit (NGU) in northern Kenya in 1981 as one component of a seismic network in a study whose principal objective was to examine the seismicity of this remote region between the Kenya and Ethiopian Rifts. The local earthquake first arrival data recorded by the small array has been analysed to produce a simple P-wave velocity model of the crust and immediate upper mantle on the north-eastern flank of the...

Teleseismic arrivals recorded by a network distributed over the northern part of the Kenya Rift in 1981 have been interpreted in terms of the structure of an anomalously low P-wave velocity upper mantle zone beneath the Kenya dome. The travel time residuals through a Jeffreys-Bullen Earth model have been compared with those derived previously by Savage and Long (1985). Their equivalence suggests that the large delays of up to about 1.9 seconds determined at stations well to the north of the...

Large quantities of organic matter are taditionally used in sweet potato mulch mounds on volcanic ash soils in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Two trials investigated compost × fertilizer interactions using a 2 4 factorial combination of compost (C), urea (N), triple superphosphate (P) and potassium chloride (K). At Taluma (altitude 2570 m) there was a highly significant (P<0.01) positive C × K interaction in addition to positive effects of C, N and P on tuber yield. At Kandep (2350 m)...

Macrophage (Mφ) migration ability and its susceptibility to methylprednisolone (MP) action, both in vivo and in vitro, were compared in young and adult guinea pigs. The random migration of oil-induced peritoneal Mφ was tested by the capillary tube method. The obersvation of Mφ locomotion from 4 to 44 h of incubation showed that cells obtained from young animals had a smaller migration ability than those of adults. Besides that, differences in reactivity to MP were observed between the...

This paper outlines a model for teacher participation in curriculum development, and reports reactions to the model based on a large scale field study in Tanzania. The model comprises six principles of curriculum development, five levels of decision-making with teachers represented at every level, and national guidelines for the process of development. A representative sample of teachers, curriculum developers, school inspectors, school heads, ministry officials and teacher educators...

In American society today, a college education is perceived as a status symbol, a measure of academic achievement, and the beginning of professional and monetary opportunity. For African American and other underrepresented minority groups, a college degree is particularly important. Many African Americans who earn college degrees enter professional careers; thus, education is a means to cross barriers and realize progress as well as a bridge to institutional development and national growth....
