This study employed a Ricardian model to measure the impact of climate change on South Africa's field crops and analysed potential future impacts of further changes in the climate. A regression of farm net revenue on climate, soil and other socio-economic variables was conducted to capture farmer-adapted responses to climate variations. The analysis was based on agricultural data for seven field crops (maize, wheat, sorghum, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower and soybean), climate and edaphic...

In order to confirm the phenomenon of tracking of cardiovascular risk factors among school children, we undertook in 2003, a prospective survey of a population of 789 pupils aged 13 to 15 years who had participated in a first investigation on cardiovascular risk factors in 1999. We were able to follow and study 453 pupils (57.4% of the initial population). Prevalences of hypertension and obesity were respectively 11.3% and 6.1% without significant difference between sexes. On the other hand,...

Abstract : In its report on The Power to Protect, Refugees International, an independent nongovernmental organization dedicated to helping embattled and uprooted peoples like those of Darfur, examined what sorts of intervention forces could stop such mass killing and displacement. Noting recent advances in Western military concepts and capabilities that exploit information technology, The Power to Protect sought to determine whether and how these advances can enhance the military's ability...

The education of farmers would be result oriented if among other things the learning enhancement situations are created. Farmers' receptivity to training largely depends on the use of several educational methods by extension agents to reach farmers in Mezam division of Northwest province of Cameroon. Data were collected from May to August 2000 using Kerlinger's n;30 sampling technique in the division since no definite sampling frame could be obtained. The result indicates that majority are...

The potential of many African American students is undetected due to misperceptions about their intellectual ability and achievement. These misperceptions cause inadequate instructional responses, which in turn perpetuate the cycle of underachievement. This article analyzes the bases for many of these misperceptions, explores the impact of culture on learning, and provides guidelines for eliciting and nurturing the potential of African American students for whom race is a factor in school.

In Africa, little is known about child mental health. This study piloted the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in Kinshasa, investigated mental health problems and the association between these problems and school performance, demographic factors, illness and nutrition. An epidemiological survey was conducted with 1,187 children, 7-9 years old, recruited from randomly selected schools. Mental health problems were assessed with the SDQ (a behavioural screening tool) administered...

The article compares the setting of targets in three different domains in Kenya—schools, skills development, and jobs. In political terms, the first of these has proved the most immediately ‘do-able’, and especially once free primary education (FPE) became the target of the new government. The additional numbers entering schools have been dramatic, but major worries remain about sustainability and the impact on quality. In the domain of skills training, target setting has proved much more...

Asia and Africa make up 72 percent of the world's population and must play a defining role in the development of the world. To do so, the two continents must combine their physical and non-physical resources and inspire each other to greater heights in all aspects of human endeavour. This realisation was brought home very vividly in the speeches delivered by heads of government that met for the Second Asian-African Strategic Partnership (NAASP) summit held in Jakarta, Indonesia on 22-23...

With the end of civil war in 1991, Ethiopia's government launched a New Education and Training Policy in 1994 which, by the early 2000s, had already produced remarkable results. The gross enrollment ratio rose from 20 to 62 percent in primary education between 1993-94 and 2001-02; and in secondary and higher education it climbed, respectively, from 8 to 12 percent and from 0.5 to 1.7 percent. Yet the government can hardly afford to rest on its laurels. Primary education is still not...

ABSTRACT: Life continues to change for minority children in general and African American children in particular in public schools where federal legislation mandates extensive high-stakes testing. Although high-stakes testing is a prominent element of public schooling in the United States, it has generated serious concerns from one of its primary clientele-the students. Drawing on interviews with students, this study presents an account of six African American students' perceptions of...

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) has different epidemiologic and clinical patterns, depending on the level of endemicity in a given geographic area. Tunisia is considered a region of high endemicity for hepatitis. Improvement of socioeconomic conditions in this country has made a determination of the seroprevalence of this disease advisable. We assessed the seroprevalence of HAV in Sousse in central Tunisia. A total of 2,400 school children 5-20 years of age (mean +/- SD age = 11.7 +/- 3.5 years)...

ABSTRACT: Extant literature on the underrepresentation of African Americans in science-related careers has identified numerous factors that correlate with students' career considerations. While these correlations provide substantial insight, the tendency to infer cause is problematic. This position paper draws on data from an exploratory study to illustrate that alternative interpretations are probable and to advocate the need for a deeper understanding of the relationship between students'...

International goals have been set to protect global plant diversity and limit ecosystem damage due to climate change, but large-scale effects of changing climate on species distributions have yet to be fully considered in conservation efforts. For sub-Saharan Africa we study the shifts in climatically suitable areas for 5197 African plant species under future climate models for the years 2025, 2055, and 2085 generated by the Hadley Center’s third generation coupled ocean-atmosphere General...

Caregiving and its consequences are major concerns for nurses. Many studies have examined health-promoting behaviors in general (Duffy, 1993; Walker, Volkan, Sechrist, & Pender, 1988), but few studies have explored health-promoting behaviors of caregivers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of age, gender, race, and length of caregiving on perceived health status and health-promoting behaviors of African-American and White informal caregivers of impaired elders. Data from a...

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent studying topics in a cultural context affected African American students' achievement. Mathematics achievement was measured by a pre-assessment and post-assessment. The literature addresses fact that all students can benefit from learning about culture and mathematics. Several educators (Hilliard, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1997; Snipes, 1997; Strutchens, 1994; Tate, 1995, 1997; Zaslavsky, 1988) have specifically addressed...
