• Farmers’ behaviour in adapting to climate variability shocks and impacts reveal a cause-effect relationship. • The study appreciates farmers’ ability to perceive changes in climate and assess its severity leading to adaptation. • Farmers made varied choices bringing diverse adaptation reaction paths. • There is proof of manipulation and maladaptation practices due to the complex nature of climate variability.
