The predominant objective of any education systemis one of providing quality education for all learners in order to enable them to realise their full potential, thereby enabling them to contribute to and participate in society. During the last two decades international policy development has turned the focus on providing quality education for all learners within the mainstreamof education, thereby removing the stigma and stereotyping of learners with barriers to learning. South Africa has...

Abstract Location, Aim Long Island, 55 km north of New Guinea, erupted explosively in the seventeenth century and has been recolonized by animals and plants. Effectively in 1968, an island, Motmot, emerged from Long's 13 km‐diameter fresh‐water caldera lake, about 4 km from the nearest shore. A nested pair of colonization sequences is thus available for study. Long Island has been recolonized by birds, and Motmot has been colonized, presumably from the surrounding ring of Long Island. In...

Abstract Aim This study considered the colonization of disturbed island ecosystems by Ficus species (Moraceae). Specifically, we examined the extent of colonization (compared with source areas), differential roles of seed dispersing birds and mammals, and the Ficus fruit characters influencing mode of colonization. Location Research was conducted on Long Island (5°20′S; 147°10′E), a volcanic island 55 km from Papua New Guinea, which erupted catastrophically in c. 1645 with probable...

This article analyzes a case of possession by spirit familiars (majini) among female students of a primary school in the Taita/Taveta District of Kenya. I explore the symbolic and historical significance of majini among the people of Taita (Wataita), examining in particular the homology among local conceptions of majini and local conceptions of money. I argue that the idea of majini has long reflected the discontents of the particular modernity that emerged in late colonial and post-colonial...

OBJECTIVE—To determine whether insulin resistance and secretion differ in obese premenopausal African-American women with and without glucose intolerance. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—A total of 63 women underwent oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs). A total of 48 women underwent frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests (FSIGTs). Insulin resistance was determined from the insulin sensitivity index (SI) from the FSIGT. Insulin secretion during the OGTT was determined by (I30 min...

Noise and aminoglycosides initially attack cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs). Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are used for the early diagnosis of damage to OHCs. The effects of sub-damaging doses of amikacin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic agent, on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) were examined in guinea pigs. Animals were grouped by gender and exposed to broadband noise at 105 dB SPL for 12 h and/or injected i.m. with either amikacin (100 mg/kg/day) or saline for 10 days....

Three issues are addressed in this paper. First, we use both household and macro data to establish how fast per capita consumption and incomes grew in Ghana in the 1990s. Second, we ask how much of the rise in incomes was due to rises in the level of human capital and how much reflected underlying technical progress. Third, we assess the implications of how incomes rose for the interpretation of changes in the poverty profile. Four household surveys are used to show changes in both...

Abstract Biogeographical context Long Island, in Vitiaz Strait, is 55 km north of New Guinea, 60 km from Umboi Island and 125 km from New Britain. After its explosive caldera‐forming eruption in about 1645, Long is being recolonized by animals and plants. Through renewed volcanic activity in the 1950s a new island emerged from Long's caldera lake, 4 km from the nearest lake shore and was recreated by eruptions in 1968. Long Island thus provides the opportunity to study a nested pair of...

Abstract Location, aims Long Island's biota was destroyed by volcanic eruption in c. 1645, and Motmot, an emergent island in its caldera lake, was re‐created in 1968, providing a nested pair of natural colonization sequences. In 1999 we surveyed the plants and vertebrates of Long and the entire biota of Motmot for comparison with previous surveys of Long (1932, 1972, birds only) and Motmot (1969–88). Results The known flora of Long is 305 vascular plants (thirty‐two pteridophytes, 273...

Abstract Recognizing the persistent science achievement gap between inner‐city African American students and students from mainstream, White society, this article suggests that the imposition of external standards on inner‐city schools will do little to ameliorate this gap because such an approach fails to address the significance of the social and cultural lives of the students. Instead, it is suggested that the use of critical ethnographic research would enable educators to learn from the...
