Abstract Recent observations show that human‐induced climate change (CC) and land transformation (LT) are threatening wildlife globally. Thus, there is a need to assess the sensitivity of wildlife on large spatial scales and evaluate whether national parks (NPs), a key conservation tools used to protect species, will meet their mandate under future CC and LT conditions. Here, we assess the sensitivity of 277 mammals at African scale to CC at 10′ resolution, using static LT assumptions in a...

The influence of crude oil on maize growth and soil properties were evaluated in an Ultisol in Ihiagwa, Imo State, Nigeria. Four kg of air-dried soil samples were weighed into 4.5 litre plastic pots and treatment consisting of 6 levels of crude oil (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 t/ha) applied. Ten healthy maize seeds (Variety: Farz 27) were sown and the pots arranged in a completely randomized block design. Field trial was also conducted and three maize seeds (var. Farz 27) which were later thinned...

“Worst drought in a decade” leaves Kenya crippledWakabi, W. - 2006 - The Lancet, 367(9514), 891–892
The drought plaguing Kenya since the failure of last year's rains has killed 40% of the country's cattle and has claimed at least 40 human lives. Fending off accusations of “sloppy” government, Kenya's president has declared the resulting famine a national disaster. Wairagala Wakabi reports. In Kenya's northeastern region of Mandera, desperate pastoralists have started sharing some of their meals with livestock in a bid to save the few animals that have not yet died due to drought. Grazing...

An after-school obesity prevention program for African American children is proposed in this paper. The prevention program is a behavioral education program designed to facilitate healthy behavior changes in obesity self-care and provide culturally sensitive interventions specifically for obese African American children. The self-care concepts addressed involve: knowledge of obesity, exercise, and nutrition. The culturally sensitive interventions address the problems of low self-esteem,...

The non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor efavirenz is mainly metabolised by the polymorphic cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2B6. Genomic DNA from four subjects in a group of 51 patients being treated with efavirenz and having surprisingly high plasma concentrations were screened by direct sequencing for mutations in the CYP2B6 gene. Four exonic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 516G > T, 714G > A, 785A > G and 983T > C, and eight intronic SNPs were identified. Haplotype analysis...

The war in Sierra Leone in Western Africa ended in 2000 by the intervention of the United Nations and peace-building approaches started taking shape. At the top level was the sponsorship and direction provided by a global body, the World Bank, working with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST). At a policy level and at the grassroots level was the direct experiential knowledge of teachers and non-government organisation workers that was central to the...

School choice is often identified with right-leaning, voucher-happy, market-oriented public school systems like those found in the United States. Thus, the proposition that a social democratic state such as South Africa will offer many primary and secondary school learners far greater choice strikes many as counter-intuitive and implausible. The authors demonstrate that the three major pieces of education framework legislation—National Education Policy Act (NEPA), South Africa Schools Act...

OBJECTIVE To determine the acceptance of HIV testing by pregnant women referred to the antenatal clinic at a tertiary training hospital. Women who accepted testing and were positive received nevirapine. Their babies also received nevirapine within 72 hours of birth. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists were equipped with counselling and management skills for prevention of mother to child HIV vertical transmission. DESIGN Substudy of a prospective operational research. SETTING Harare Central...

This paper describes an exploratory study on the usage of computerised school information systems (CISs) in the administration and management of the biggest secondary schools in Uganda. The field of information technology in educational management (ITEM) has been mostly confined to the developed countries that its potential in the developing countries in regard to its usage and implications on the schools that use it has not been studied (Bisaso, 2003). The literature reveals that developing...

The purpose of this study was to validate the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI) in the South African context. The sample used in this study was a convenience sample of 240 employees working for a Banking group. Exploratory factor analysis of the LTSI was used to determine if an interpretable factor structure of latent transfer system constructs when applied in the South African context could be identified. From the results it appears that the factor structure of the LTSI, as revealed...

There is little data on the burden of neurological impairment (NI) in developing countries, particularly in children of Africa. We conducted a survey of NI in children aged 6-9 years in a rural district of Kenya. First, we screened for neurological disability by administering the Ten Questions Questionnaire (TQQ) to parents/guardians of children in a defined population. In phase two, we performed a comprehensive clinical and psychological assessment on children who tested positive on TQQ and...
