As its title suggests, this paper explores the compatibility of outcomes-based education (OBE), the recognition of prior learning (RPL) and adult education in higher education in South Africa. OBE and RPL entered the consciousness of South African educators in the 1990s, when policymakers, responding to economic and political imperatives to develop a more skilled and flexible workforce, turned to overseas models of integrated education and training systems. OBE and RPL are often described as...

The paper explores the changing nature of the roles of universities in developing countries at the outset of the 21st century. It argues that, while remaining centres of academic excellence and creative thought, they must be prepared to add to these roles if they are likely to continue to attract public funding. They must become institutions which seek to provide their knowledge and academic expertise, which they create through much research and traditionally passed on through on-campus...

This article explores how Maasai cultural practices could be applied to the goal Kenya has long held of developing a sense of nation among its diverse peoples. It sets the context for education for post-independence Africa and examines patterns of development in Kenyan education from 1964 to 1992. Maasai practices-in-culture, or enculturative processes, are explored, with the suggestion that these provide some solutions to problems in Kenyan education, and experiments with reifying this through music.

The legacy of the brutality of apartheid in South Africa is a violent social context characterized by high levels of unemployment, extremes of wealth and poverty, continuing racism, the easy availability of guns and patriarchal values and behaviours. Violent crime is widespread in South Africa and schools in disadvantaged areas suffer from serious problems of gang-related crime. This article discusses a pilot project with a cluster of three schools in Durban which investigated whether...

Abstract Aim Long Island erupted catastrophically in c . 1645 with the probable destruction of its entire biota. While several expeditions have visited the island since, no survey of its flora has been published. In 1968 a small island, Motmot, emerged from its caldera lake. Motmot has been surveyed several times but not since 1988. The aim of this study was to investigate the colonization by vascular plants of this interesting nested pair of islands. Location Long Island is 55 km off the...

Local coastal communities are highly dependent upon the marine environment not only for protein but also as a primary source of income. In addition, there are growing economic opportunities offered within the coastal zone. As populations increase in these areas there is an increasing demand on coastal resources. This in turn requires effective management initiatives at regional, national and local levels. The Marine Education and Training Programme in Mtwara, southern Tanzania was a small...

The adult education literature is clearly lacking as a source of knowledge about learning among African Americans. This study examined the motivations for learning among African American adults in three church-based adult education programs. A survey was developed to identify learners' motivations. A seven-factor structure was selected as the most conceptually meaningful in explaining their motivations. Four factors were identified that are consistent with findings of prior research, and...

This article poses as problematic the relationship between images and the personal identities of teachers. By images I mean the official projections through various policy texts of what the ideal teacher looks like; by personal identities I mean (for now) the understandings that teachers hold of themselves in relation to official policy images. The dislocation between policy visions and practical realities in schools and classrooms remains a vexing problem to education change theorists (see Hargreaves, 1998; Sayed & Jansen, 2001).
