This paper explores the effectiveness of initial vernacular education for successful transfer to English. The data is drawn from the personal, innovative experiences of a local vernacular elementary school teacher in Papua New Guinea, who helped individual children to gain literacy skills in the local vernacular. This success has brought much joy not only to the teacher but also to the children and their parents.

This article brings to our attention the intricacies and possibilities of teaching and learning in post-apartheid public schools of South Africa.2 My argument moves from the premise that if the South African school system is meant to build a democratic nation, then it must reflect the democratic objectives of the nation. Research (e.g. Chisholm, 2002; Jansen, 1999) shows that in the last five years the new curriculum implemented to replace apartheid education has encountered significant...

Mining takes place at depths of 2-3 km in South Africa, thereby inducing events with M \textgreater 3 in the close vicinity of stopes, with the largest events so far recorded being M \textgreater 5. As a result, seismogenic processes can be monitored at very short distances with sensors installed ahead of time in seismogenic areas. We refer to this process as a semi-controlled earthquake-generation experiment, which cannot be done with natural earthquakes monitored from the Earth's surface....

Today Kenya is among the poorest countries in the world. The political instability and economic stagnation of the 90s may have accelerated this by disrupting the operation of almost all the sectors in the country as argued by Abagi( 1997). For instance, Education sector was adversely affected, since in that period, costs were relatively higher than most parents would afford resulting in school dropouts, yet common investment lmowledge considers education, as a key component of human...

As bone marrow transplantation (BMT) increases, the availability of suitable donors becomes critical, especially for African Americans, who require a large donor pool to find a suitable match. Previous studies indicated willingness to donate marrow may be a barrier for achieving a large donor pool.We conducted a random-sample, statewide telephone survey of 421 Caucasians and 408 African Americans in South Carolina to determine if racial differences in willingness to donate bone marrow exist....

We examined the metabolic effects of rosiglitazone therapy on glucose control, insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, and adiponectin in first-degree relatives of African Americans with type 2 diabetes (DM) with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and DM for 3 months. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed before and after 3 months of...

This is of utmost importance in primary health care. Taking into account the level of training of secondary-level nurses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a systemic approach, based on the PRECEDE PROCEED model of analysis, led to a better understanding of the educational determinants and of the factors...
