In Open and Distance Learning (ODL), the shift from synchronous to asynchronous models of instruction is gaining momentum. Asynchronous models in ODL enhance universities’ potential to reach a larger component of the student market as distance is no longer any issue. However, there are a number of variables that must be considered in order for the strategy to be effective. McKenzie points out that the transition from other forms of instructional delivery to E-tutoring involves...

To the Editor : I read Dr Mlombe's letter on clinical haematology training in South Africa in the June SAMJ with interest. Patients with haematological disorders must be treated with a seamless connection between the laboratory and the clinic. The FCPath (SA) (Haem) (Fellowship of the Colleges of Pathologists of South Africa in Haematology) final exam also includes clinical cases.

This article reports on findings pertaining to scholarship in teacher education drawn from a wider study on all education research in South Africa from 1995 to 2006. The study, which defined education research as broadly pertaining to teaching and/or learning, obtained extensive data from a wide range of sources: universities, non-government organisations (NGOs), education and training authorities and electronic databases. The levels, scale, educational sectors and disciplinary areas of each...

We construct a model of development, civil war, and climate change. There are multiple interactions. Economic growth reduces the probability of civil war and the vulnerability to climate change. Climate change increases the probability of civil war. The impacts of climate change, civil war, and civil war in the neighbouring countries reduce economic growth. The model has two potential poverty traps ? a climate-change-induced one and a civil-war-induced one ? and the two poverty traps may...

In this essay, Duane argues that reading two disparate texts together—the largely unknown school records chronicling the work of antebellum black children and a text by the most prominent African American author in the canon—allows a powerful model to emerge for reading the mediated voices of children, slaves, and other marginalized people. Duane recovers and analyzes the records of the New York African Free School in the 1810s and 1820s, an archive that features the work of the first...

In vivo effects of GABAB receptor-positive modulators suggest them to have therapeutic potential to treat central nervous system disorders such as anxiety and drug abuse. Although these effects are thought to be mediated by positive modulation of GABAB receptors, such modulation has been examined primarily in vitro. This study further examined the in vivo properties of the GABAB receptor-positive modulators...

<h3>Background</h3> Occupational injuries are a public health problem. Determining rates, types and burden of occupational injuries is critical in planning prevention strategies. <h3>Objectives</h3> To describe the epidemiology of occupational injuries in the Eastern Delta industrial region of Egypt and to measure the burden of these injuries in terms of DALYs. <h3>Method</h3> A retrospective chart review was conducted of all individuals with occupational injuries presenting in 2008 to the...

Mesenchymal tumours of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are uncommon. Recent progress in the understanding of the biology and origin of these tumours has led to their reclassification. A new subclass designated Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GIST) is diagnosed based on the presence of a mutational over expression of c-kit protein that is thought to be critical in the pathogenesis of these tumours. This new class oftumours may form the majority of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumours. Even...

Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound whose neuroprotective activity was extensively studied in vitro. In this study, we provided functional in vivo evidence that FA limits noise-induced hearing loss. Guinea-pigs exposed to acoustic trauma for 1 h exhibited a significant impairment in auditory function; this injury was evident as early as 1 day from noise exposure and persisted over 21 days. Ferulic acid (150 mg/kg i.p. for 4 days) counteracted noise-induced hearing loss at days 1, 3, 7...

Data from rural Malawi are used to assess the role of forests in rural household adaptation to climate variability, and to examine implications for adaptation to future climate change. Although forests do not currently play a role in anticipatory adaptation by rural households, they do appear important for reactive coping: providing food during shortages, and a source of cash for coping with weather-related crop failure. We find households most reliant on forests have low income per person,...

The Holocene explosive eruptive record of Rungwe and Ngozi volcanoes of the Rungwe Volcanic Province in Tanzania was reconstructed based on detailed stratigraphic field evidence combined with whole-rock major and trace element analyses of tephra samples. This reconstruction is supported by 25 new radiocarbon dates on palaeosols that provide additional constraints on the Holocene tephro-chronostratigraphy. We show evidence of two catastrophic Ngozi eruptions and five Rungwe pumice fallout...

The poor performance of students in the various universities has been attributed to the inability of students to effectively retrieve information for academic work. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prospects and challenges of information retrieval among university students. The survey research method was used to investigate the awareness and use of information retrieval systems, document retrieved and its relevance to student’s information need, challenges of information...
