Abstract Integrated dynamic water and chloride balance models with a catchment‐scale hydrological model (PRMS) are used to investigate the response of a terminal tropical lake, Lake Abiyata, to climate variability and water use practices in its catchment. The hydrological model is used to investigate the response of the catchment to different climate and land‐use change scenarios that are incorporated into the lake model. Lake depth–area–volume relationships were established from lake...

We report 38 new 3He/4He ratios for mafic phases in basalts and ultramafic xenolith whole rock and mineral separates from 10 of the 12 main volcanic centers of the intraplate Cameroon Volcanic Line in West Africa. Samples range in eruption age from ∼6 Ma to the present. This constitutes yet the largest helium data set for the 1600-km long mainly alkaline volcanic chain. 3He/4He ratios are all lower than expected for ‘high 3He/4He’ hotspots like Loihi and Iceland, demonstrating that none of...

Abstract We use firm-level panel data for the manufacturing sector in four African countries to investigate whether exporting impacts on efficiency, and whether efficient firms self-select into the export market. Based on simultaneous estimation of a production function and an export regression, our preferred results indicate significant efficiency gains from exporting, which can be interpreted as learning by exporting. We show that modelling unobserved heterogeneity by a flexible approach...
