Abstract We assess the impact on teenage childbearing as well as student knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of a typical HIV/AIDS teacher training program in the Cameroon. Applying a regression discontinuity design identification strategy based on the key administrative criterion that determined program deployment, we find that 15–17 year old girls in teacher training schools are between 7 and 10 percentage points less likely to have started childbearing, an objective proxy for the incidence...

Abstract The South Durban Basin on the eastern coast of South Africa is home to both a large‐scale petrochemical industry and a highly mobilized residential community. In a conflict cemented by apartheid‐era planning, the community's campaigns to improve local air quality provide a test case for the value of conflict for participatory democratic structures. In the context of the work of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the South Durban Basin also provides an opportunity to...

Marsden (2006) suggests that rurality as a signifier is transformative, capable of changing behaviour and affecting the motivation of teachers, community workers, and learners. Research from the projects located in rural areas, and projects which focus on the challenges associated with rurality, demonstrate that the very generative and transformative nature of rurality serves both to inform but also to delimit the effectiveness of intervention programmes designed, often with the best of...

After the Gondwana break-up and Greater India splitting off, Madagascar suffered volcanic episodes. The Cretaceous Morondava flood basalt (CFB) province was emplaced ca. 93 Ma ago. Two coeval high-Ti–P (HTP) and low-Ti–P (LTP) suites are distributed within the alkaline Ankilizato (central) and tholeiitic Manamana (southern) sub-provinces. Sr–Nd isotope compositions display a trend from depleted (εNd = + 7.5; Sri = 0.7030; Antsoha end-member) to highly enriched products (εNd = − 17; Sri =...

Often people with diabetes are confused as a result of unstructured or incomplete education on their condition and therefore cannot maintain optimal health and a good quality of life. There may be underlying emotional or stress-related issues that should be addressed before patients can become self-motivated with regard to managing their disease. Much needs...

This study examined African American students’ perceived fear of having a seropositive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, their general self‐efficacy, and screening efficacy. General self‐efficacy is believed to be a factor in facilitating change in one’s behavior. The sample ( N = 398) consisted of graduate and undergraduate African American students enrolled at one Historically Black College and University. About one‐fifth of the sample reported they were afraid to be screened for...

Cape Town is no stranger to grandiose views and modern development. After all, the City Bowl area is the only place in the world to view a devil and a lion seated across a table from one another—Devil's Peak to the east and Lion's Head to the west are set apart by the two miles of leveled plateau known as Table Mountain. This mountainous cradle is both a physically and metaphorically striking snapshot. The Devil, signifying chaos, darkness, and ego, balanced on a scale with the authority, wisdom, and courage of the lion.
