Alarmist as it may sound, some South African schools are increasingly beginning to resemble war zones. Almost on a daily basis new reports appear regarding the escalation of violence in schools. Furthermore, there seems to be a spectacular lack of decisive leadership in the war against runaway crime in schools. It has become clear that all schools are not free to teach and all pupils not free to learn.

The volcanic activity of Mts Bambouto and Oku (Western Highlands) and of the Ngaoundere Plateau, in the continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, Equatorial West Africa, ranges in age from Oligocene to Recent. It is characterized by basanitic, alkali basaltic and transitional basaltic series. Mineral chemistry, major and trace element bulk-rock compositions, and geochemical modelling suggest that the magmatic series evolved mainly at low pressure (2–4 kbar) through fractional...

It argues that while these classes may, in relative terms, be an important vector of memory for the young, in absolute terms very little information is transmitted. Indeed, as currently taught, the history of the Algerian war is increasingly partial, fragmentary and selective. This is clearly shown through a study of both written and oral...
