Abstract Impacts of climate change can differ from one region to another. We combine the household-level panel data with weather and climate data to examine the heterogeneity of the impacts of climate change on crop yields across different crops and agro-ecologies in Ethiopia. Our results show that climate change will induce an increase in coffee and teff yields by 31% and 8.3%, respectively, at high altitudes by the years 2041–2060 compared to 1988–2018, under a medium emissions scenario....

Over the past 15 years, the debate within urban studies regarding informal settlements has become quite lively, thanks to several outstanding voices that have brought dignity back to urban topics regarding the Global South. Despite this, the limited production of programme analyses by planning scholars is indicative of how the subject is still delegated to international agencies. By critically reviewing the framework, the goals, the implementation and the results of the program ‘Villes sans...

Climate shocks are one of the most decried threats to farmers, especially in developing countries where agriculture remains largely dependent on rainfall. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been shown to be an effective solution. Unfortunately, this solution is struggling to materialise. Meanwhile, farmers have to survive. Thus, to mitigate the adverse effects of shocks, they are forced to adopt. However, they face a multitude of strategies, some of which can jeopardise their...

A regional seismic risk analysis for central-southern Malawi is conducted by focusing on the Bilila-Mtakataka Fault within the East African Rift System and by incorporating local information on population exposure and building vulnerability. The scenario-based earthquake risk assessments account for uncertainty in geometry, position, and rupture pattern of the Bilila-Mtakataka Fault as well as ground-motion variability and are based on the latest 2018 national census data. In addition,...

Spatial skills, cognition and geometry’s connection is owed to their characterisation with space and spatial orientation, consequently, the duo is seen as a tool for human cognitive development, particularly true in geometry application and cognition. Such a view is anchored on the fact that for most science, technology, and mathematics (STEM) disciples, spatial skills have primarily been used as and described as the ability to mentally or physically orient 3D objects in space. Evidence also...

Climate change is a growing concern for farmers and food systems across the globe, raising interest in their resilience to climate change. Thus, exploring farm resilience in various contexts may help understand its prerequisites and build context and scale-specific strategies. Using an adaptive cycle framework through a survey-based assessment of the resilience of farmers in Uganda and Switzerland, we assessed farmers’ resilience across a set of 13 behaviour-based indicators. Farm resilience...

The fact that poverty has largely been conceptualised from a narrow financial perspective in South African higher education may have contributed to its perpetuation among students. There is limited research on the multidimensionality of poverty, particularly its wide-ranging effect on students in universities. Using the capabilities approach, this study explores the extent of poverty, as well as the way various dimensions of deprivation interplay to affect the wellbeing and success of...

Digitalization is considered to be the new hope in perspective development of education in sub-Saharan Africa still lacking for free access to effective schooling. Despite the several notable projects, further plans for the digital transformation of education in the region may encounter certain difficulties. Developing global economic and political crises may affect the innovative development of most countries in the region where an overwhelming number of social initiatives depend on funding...

The Need for a Comprehensive Overhaul of Disability Rights in the African UnionGuématcha, E. - 2022
The history of people with disabilities in Africa discloses a high degree of complexity. Although the Organisation of African Union and the African Union (‘AU’) have made some progress, particularly via the adoption of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the concept of ‘different ability’ is far from being implemented effectively. At the State level, in addition to insufficient action, as concerns, for example, the...
