This article critically examines the extent to which one emerging NGO facilitates the participation of its beneficiaries and other stakeholders in the decision-making processes at the identification, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of basic education programmes in Malawi. The author argues that despite the comparative advantage of this NGO[1], the participation of their stakeholders, including local community members, is tokenistic as decisions are largely top-down. The author...

Studies on input adoption consider education as one of the most important factors that affect adoption decisions. However, very little is known about the spill-over effect of intra-household education on the adoption process and about the impact of education on adoption decisions under different socioeconomic conditions. We investigate these two issues using a discrete choice model. The results indicate that the decision making process is a decentralised one in which educated adult members...

French textbooks from 1840 to the last reform and three recent Tunisian textbooks were studied to analyze how electrochemistry, and particularly the Daniell cell, was presented to students in secondary school. The technical and historical importance of the Daniell cell induced curriculum designers to introduce it very early in the chemistry sequence. However, due to progress in the understanding of redox reactions, emphasis was finally put on half reactions involving only one redox couple....

In this study we examined parent and teacher agreement at the item level of the newly revised Child Behavior Checklist/1 1/2-5 (CBCL/1 1/2-5) and Caregiver-Teacher Report Form/1 1/2-5 (CTRF/1 1/2-5) in 505 preschool children from low-income and predominantly African American families. Parents generally rated more children as having problem behaviors than did teachers. Lack of agreement between parents and teachers at the item level was indicated by low correlation coefficients, kappa values,...

AbstractThe maximum daily cassava flour intake of children may be calculated from determination of the total cyanide content of cassava flour and urinary thiocyanate levels of school children in samples collected at the same time and place. Four sites, two with and two without recent konzo cases, were chosen for study. In two sites with recent konzo cases, 84% and 93% of school children consumed cassava the previous day, and the calculated maximum daily consumption of cassava was over 700 g....

Women play a very vital role in national development. The role relates to a complete range of socio‐economic activities. Rural women are not only users of basic services, bearers and socialisers of children and keepers of the home, they also represent a product potential, which is not being fully tapped. Records have shown that women form more than half the population of Nigeria therefore the development of Nigeria cannot be realized if half of the people are left illiterate with no serious...

The subjects were 17 second-year Kenyan Bible college students enrolled in a course on Christian Church history,...
