The ∼3.45–3.42 Ga Buck Ridge volcano-sedimentary complex (BR-vsc) forms the uppermost part of the Hooggenoeg Formation, in the early Archaean Onverwacht Group of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa. The complex consists mainly of massive and pillowed basalts and felsic, quartz-plagioclase porphyritic rocks, which are capped by pervasively silicified sedimentary rocks. Deposition of the felsic extrusive and (volcani-)clastic sedimentary rocks occurred in shallow water to emersion,...

The Lindeques Drift and Heidelberg Intrusions and the volcanic Roodekraal Complex belong to a high-Ti mafic igneous suite (HITIS) that was emplaced in the Kaapvaal Craton as km-sized bodies, to the north and north-east of the Vredefort impact structure, prior to impact. New zircon SHRIMP ages for the Lindeques Drift Intrusion (2054.8 ± 5.7 Ma) and Roodekraal Complex (2053 ± 9.2 Ma) are indistinguishable from that of the Bushveld magmatic event (~2.06 to 2.05 Ga). The dominant rock types in...

Abstract Prosperity—continuous and sustainable wealth creation—is an elusive goal in South African smallholder agriculture. This paper suggests that agricultural extension can facilitate realising this objective if an appropriate approach to extension can be developed. To develop such an approach requires that the definition of extension and the assumptions on which that definition rests are challenged. The objective of such an interrogation would be to reshape principles and assumptions so...

The development of staff in any organization in order to attain quality results is a sine qua non. The human resource of any organization, including schools and colleges is central to its effectiveness. What matters is the model that is used to enable the development of staff, in this case the development of teachers in secondary schools. This article argues that the school-based workshops as a component of staff development in the schools is the most effective due to several reasons, among...

Although there are key differences in both screening behavior and tumor characteristics, an additional part of this mortality difference may lie in the fact that African American women receive suboptimal adjuvant chemotherapy and may receive suboptimal hormonal therapy, therapies that are known to increase survival. The authors consider ethnic...

There are good reasons to celebrate the ICTR’s achievements. Although these achievements are, however, loudly touted in international circles, their meaning remains insignificant in Rwanda. A recent survey conducted in Rwanda revealed that many Rwandans have a negative attitude toward the ICTR. One may, therefore, wonder whether this perception is justified, and to what extent the ICTR has failed to bring justice to Rwandans. This article examines the areas in which the ICTR has failed to...

Palliative care for people with chronic, life limiting, progressive conditions is a worldwide concern. Progressive illness is defined as long-term illness, that often limits daily activities and which medical interventions can control and not cure (Dowrick et al 2005). Progressive illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability (WHO 2004). Their rising incidence and prevalence creates major challenges for health and social services within individual countries and internationally (WHO 2002).
