A retrospective study of ectopic pregnancies seen in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from January 1991 to December 1993 was conducted. The incidence was 39.5/1000 deliveries; patients with ectopic were not of lower parity than those with normal pregnancies. The incidence of historical predisposing factors was 11.08%, although findings at operation indicated a much higher incidence of previous pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Dizziness/fainting and abdominal distension were more frequent than...

A study was made of stress factors experienced by primary school teachers in Zambia after they had attended a course on stress management and counselling skills. Their pupils were significantly affected by poverty, death and illness of parents, fellow-pupils and teachers, teenage sex and pregnancy, violence in the home and, among girls, low self-esteem. The HIV epidemic had a major bearing on these factors, and there were wide-ranging effects on the teachers' own lives. Despite the training...

This paper describes the structure of digital and computer system curricula at a university in South Africa and shows how programmable logic is successfully applied in an environment where ASIC designs are not yet feasible. Programmable logic is used in the courses for rapid prototyping of much more complex digital structures, much quicker and easier, than in the past. VHDL is used to describe digital and computer structures at algorithmic level. Stellenbosch University is the first...

Abstract. - Two recent volcanic eruptions (Pinatubo, Philippines, 1991 and Rabaul, Papua - New-Guinea, 1994) have examplified direct and indirect volcanic hazards. These could occur immediately, during the eruption (ash fall...) or after a more or less long time span (lahars), sometimes in a distant area (tidal wave). Moreover, human occupation increases the volcanic risk as well as meteoric / climatic factors (heavy rain, wind direction). All of these risks must be taken into account by scientific teams and public responsibles.

The impact of climatic variations around the world during 1997-98 El Nino episode, which brought serious drought in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, is reviewed. Drought assessment is a skill within the capability of regional countries requiring trained logistic staff to identify resources like water, agricultural, economic and health activities that might be vulnerable to result in drought.

The purpose of this article is to examine culturally relevant teaching as a political pedagogy and a contemporary manifestation of what was considered “good” teaching in many African American communities served by black segregated schools. Through examining several ethnographies and autobiographical accounts of segregated schools that were valued by black students and families, I assert that the “good” of these institutions hinged not simply on the cultural similarities between teachers and...

The paper presents a cost-benefit analysis of a higher education project in Mauritius by using the rate of return and net present value methods, from the individual student and society's point of view. Although there exists a very rich literature on cost-benefit analysis of an education sector as a whole, we are not aware of published estimates at the individual project level. Monte Carlo techniques are used to test the robustness of the estimates regarding the costs and the benefits...
