The Highveld region in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province has a dense concentration of coal mines and coal-fired power stations. As a result, the area experiences severe levels of air pollution. Despite the government's obligation, little has been done to remedy the harm experienced by the environment and people in the Highveld. The complexity of the relationship between the state and corporations contributes to the government's reluctance to hold mining companies accountable. Obtaining...

Although the planet is inhabited by diverse species, the one that generates the greatest amount of environmental degradation is the human species. For many decades, this has continued unabated until we are getting to tipping points in so far as the dangers of climate change are being experienced. This is contrary to the creation mandate where humans are given the responsibility of stewardship of the universe. Many conversations have been held on what can be done to reverse the trend of earth...

Climate change has emerged as one of the critical challenges to human well-being. Changing climate places direct and indirect impacts on human activities and is mainly triggered by non-climatic stressors, which are diverse and inherent in many communities. However, there has been diversity in how climate and non-climatic stress factors affect human well-being and thus requiring locally specific contextualisation of how climate change is driving change in many ecosystems. This study analysed...

Climate risk is a major threat to the sustainable food production of many farmers who depend on rainfed agricultural systems. In response to this threat, climate-smart agricultural innovations, such as drought-tolerant and early mature crop varieties, have been developed and promoted. It is well-known that adopting innovations and improved technologies positively impact adopters' well-being. Therefore, this study sought to determine the factors influencing the adoption of climate risk...

Hydrological systems in watersheds encounter growing challenges attributed to climate change, marked by shifts in precipitation patterns, heightened drought severity, and altered runoff dynamics. This study explores the implications of these changes for streamflow in the vulnerable Bouregreg catchment. This study used a novel approach in the Bouregreg watershed to address this issue by applying the underutilized GR2M model, deviating from the prevalence of ArcSWAT and other models in...

Male engagement with public health programming, especially around stigmatised issues, is often low, which may have adverse health outcomes. Eyethu, a behavioural intervention delivered using soccer to reduce multiple risks associated with HIV and substance use among young men, was shown in a randomised trial to be ineffective. This study explored the trial's null findings to identify considerations for future male-targeted programming tackling multiple risks concurrently. We explored trial...

We use a unique dataset of Mozambique smallholder farm households to estimate children’s school attendance and educational attainment in primary education. Our results indicate that schooling is age-dependent, with increased dropouts from age 12. In male-headed families and rural areas, girls attend less and have lower odds of finishing primary education. However, among female-headed households, boys and girls attend school equally, and girls are more likely to complete primary education....

Body donation is integral to anatomy education, but procurement can be ethically fraught. While voluntary donation is preferred, the use of unclaimed bodies, although considered unethical, is a primary means for body procurement in some countries. This mixed methods study examined historical trends and anatomy technical staff perspectives on body donation in two Zimbabwean medical schools. In Phase 1, 194 cadaver paper records from January 1984 to January 2021 were reviewed. Unclaimed bodies...

Climate change is a major threat to global heritage and many sites are already experiencing impacts from climate change and related hazards. Recent studies have indicated that this challenge is especially acute in the African continent. Climate vulnerability assessment is increasingly a key tool in periodic reporting and ongoing site management and an essential first step in climate adaptation planning. This paper presents results from climate vulnerability assessments undertaken at two...

Drought is one of the most common natural disasters globally, having major impacts on environmental, economic, and social conditions and Ethiopia is no exception particularly the Oromia region. In order to evaluate and characterize the meteorological droughts associated with El Niño years over the Oromia region, the satellite data CHIRPS was used. The monthly time series data for the period from 1991 to 2020 was used for temporal and spatial analysis of meteorological drought using...

Abstract Chironomidae is a group of diptera insects, commonly known as “non-biting midges'' in the adult stage and “bloodworms” in the larval stage, represent a group of insects that thrive in various aquatic environment worldwide. Despite the plethora of information on Chironomidae in many parts of the world, there is a paucity of data regarding this indicator species in the polluted Kenyan Nyanza Gulf of Lake Victoria and molecular identification has not been explored. This study aimed to...
