The Serghaya fault, located approximately along the Syrian—Lebanese border, is a prominent structure within the 200 km restraining bend in the left-lateral Dead Sea fault system. This study documents palaeoseismic and geomorphic expressions of Holocene movements on the Serghaya fault based on trench excavations and radiocarbon dates. Trenches were excavated across and parallel to a 4.5 m fault scarp where Late Pleistocene sediments are faulted against Holocene alluvium and colluvium. Locally...

Ahfad University for Women is an amazing place! Located in Omdurman (across the Nile from the capital of Khartoum) this womens university where I was recently a consultant is a bastion of feminist activity and independent thinking in the midst of one of the darkest political periods in Sudans history. African American students score lower than European Americans on standardized measures of achievement (Trent, 1998, Jencks and Phillips, 1998). According to Jencks and Phillips (1998), this gap between the two groups begins before children enter kindergarten and continues into adulthood. Data from the Center for Educational Statistics Report (1997) indicate that during the 1970's approximately 25 percent of European American children, age three and four attended preschool. This same...

The small island nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the South Pacific offers a little-known practical example of how a small, multilingual country with limited resources has developed a package of strategies for dealing with the challenges posted by multilingualism and using its multiplicity of languages in education as a tool for improving teaching and learning, saving resources, and moving towards Education for All. This paper is based on knowledge the author gained from working on...

Based on interviews with teachers and students, the paper looks at some of the ways in which teachers' use of English as a medium of instruction sometimes frustrates the students' learning efforts instead of facilitating them. While options for change may include adopting mother tongue as an alternative medium, there are theoretical reasons for believing that it would not necessarily lead to a great improvement, since the problem is not just one of linguistic competence but has deeper roots...

Incidences of prescribed textbook usage in science classrooms in Namibia have been analysed using an approach adapted from linguistic analysis. Aspects of pedagogic purpose, text genre, and the social interactions between teachers and learners were used to characterise teacher and learner engagement with textbooks, and thus categorise their usage in relation to a national policy of learner-centred education. Results indicate a teacher dominated textbook use and a low frequency and restricted...
