The metaphor of visibility and its counterpart, invisibility, are paired throughout the article in an attempt to characterize the world of three African American women administrators as they struggle for equitable recognition—visibility—within the field of education. Using a naturalistic inquiry advocacy approach, analyses of in-depth interviews revealed portraits of women emerging from the visible absences, illusionary opportunities, and imaginary schools with stories of strength, identity...

The Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) was used to investigate the factors influencing South African female students' decision on whether or not to engage in premarital sexual intercourse. The group of participants consisted of 100 female heterosexual university students who were selected from a larger sample on the basis of sexual inexperience. As anticipated by the theory, both attitudes and subjective norms were found to predict intentions, with attitudes emerging as...

Drought is the single most important natural disaster affecting some parts of southern Africa virtually every year. Because of the region's heavy dependence on rain-fed agriculture, drought is usually associated with widespread crop failure, livestock deaths, environmental degradation, famine and socio-economic stress. Reliable seasonal rainfall forecasts could lead to proactive drought mitigation strategies. In this study, the utility of probabilistic seasonal forecasts was examined in...

This study examined the validity and reliability of scores on the Academic Self-Concept Scale (ASCS) in a group of 291 European American and 396 African American college students. The study compared the factor structure and scale and subscale internal consistencies for these samples to previously reported findings by Reynolds. The seven-factor solution reported by Reynolds was essentially replicated with the European American sample, whereas an eight-factor solution was found with the...

Examined 345 6th-grade rural African American youth (189 boys, 156 girls) over 3 years with regard to carrying weapons in school. Recent investigations with nationally representative and urban samples have shown that carrying weapons in school fits into a larger pattern of problem behaviors, including aggression and substance use, which are supported by affiliations with other deviant youth. Very little work to date has specifically examined weapon carrying in rural African American youth....

The workplace training dispensation that is evolving in South Africa represents a significant advance over previous initiatives in the country. While it is funded on the basis of payroll levies, the relatively sophisticated institutional structure in the administration of the system has caused delays in its set-up and operation. Some of these problems have been caused by delays in putting the appropriate institutions into place. Others have been caused by difficulties in aligning the...

Manufacturing industries are blooming rapidly in Barada Basin carrying high risk to environment and human health due to generating huge amounts of heavy metals to environmental media, particularly rivers. Few studies show that concentrations of chromium, cadmium, and lead exceed the standards in down streams of rivers. Risk assessment on human health urges for immediate measures to control the emission of these metals. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of comprehensive risk...

Language shift, the process by which a second language ousts a community's first language as the everyday vernacular, almost inevitably throws up a vast array of morpho-syntactic and phonetic variety in the new vernacular. This paper seeks to ascertain what choices the first post-shift generation of child learners makes from such an array of competing forms. Data from longitudinal studies undertaken in the early to mid-1990s is presented from Indian South African English, focussing on fifth...

South African higher education is currently implementing a curriculum restructuring policy aimed at the development of degree programmes that are 'coherent and integrated' and typically 'trans-, inter- or multidisciplinary'. This requirement presents a considerable challenge for faculties which have allowed students to 'mix-and-match' from a wide range of disciplinary offerings particularly the explicit assumption that academics will work in teams to develop, deliver and evaluate these...
