Abstract This study analysed and modified (where necessary) the properties of three drought indices: the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), the Bhalme–Mooley index (BMI) and the standardized precipitation index (SPI). We modified the original PDSI's recursive formula, potential runoff, and Z index, which produced more realistic results than the original PDSI (designed for the USA) for East Africa. We improved the SPI by first using a plotting position formula designed for the Pearson type...

Developing talents has been a great concern in education. New conceptions of intelligence are revolutionizing educational practices. Because giftedness can occur in certain people at certain times and under certain conditions, (Renzulli & Reis, 1985), it is necessary to extend the pedagogy for the gifted to regular classrooms. The enrichment cluster was chosen for this study for multiple reasons. This study used qualitative case study design to investigate the use of enrichment clusters...

ABSTRACT. The article describes the expansion in the numbers of women students at universities in Nigeria since the 1940s, pointing out regional differences and the ways in which development strategies to promote science and technology in education have put a brake on the enrollment of women. It also explores the limited openings for women academics in higher education in Nigeria, and the initiatives women have undertaken to promote professional development. The purpose of this article is to discuss some financial aspects of the future development of higher education in Africa entering the 21st century. Two main aspects can be distinguished: first, problems that concern the economy as a whole, the macroeconomic problems; second, questions that apply to the individual institutions of higher education. The former group includes questions such as: How much will the future expansions of higher education in Africa cost? How large is the capacity of...

In cooperative breeding vertebrates, indirect fitness benefits would be maximized by subordinates that accurately assess their relatedness to group offspring and preferentially help more closely related kin. In the Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis), we found a positive relationship between subordinate-nestling kinship (determined using microsatellite marker genotypes) and provisioning rates, but only for female subordinates. Female subordinates that helped were significantly...

Methods Eleven schools in Cape Town and ten schools in Johannesburg were surveyed. Following procurement of written, informed consent, a pre-structured questionnaire was administered to the parents/guardians of study children to obtain essential background and risk factor data. Venous blood samples were collected from children, and environmental samples taken for analysis of manganese content. Results Questionnaire data indicated that the study populations in the two cities were...

Abstract Lake Bosumtwi is one of the most widely studied palaeoclimate archives in West Africa. Results from numerous AMS 14 C dates of samples from four piston cores from Lake Bosumtwi show that an abrupt sedimentary transition from a mid-Holocene sapropel to calcareous laminated muds occurred at about 3200 cal yr B.P. High-resolution analyses of the nitrogen isotopic composition of organic matter across this transition confirm its abrupt nature, and suggest that the change may signal a...

Abstract The Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution's (CNCR) Conflict Resolution in Schools Program (CRiSP) conducted a two‐year study of inner‐city African American public school children to discern any conflict constructs and behaviors that were apparent in the children's intragroup interactions. This article presents findings of the CNCR study, including three emergent themes—fears of victimization, identity conflict, and core values—that were consistently apparent in the...

How individuals perceive their selves is not necessarily congruent with how society perceives the individual. Race, class, gender and sexual orientation typically affect the perceptions and the expectations of the viewing audience as well as the performance of the observed individuals. This article examines one of these sociocultural features--race--to explore its effects on the inter- and intraracial associations between teacher educators of color and their students. It draws on the...

Concentrations of heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni and Cd) were measured in the sediment collected from 7 stations along west Mediterranean Sea (Sidi- Krir ; open sea , east & west Sidi Krir, Sidi Barrani and El-sallum 1,2, 60m). Also, health risk has been performed in relation to recreational activities at these places, using an exposure assessment model. The results of this study indicated a general moderate or absence of serious pollution in these places due to heavy metals;...

Male-child syndrome is a socio-cultural factor responsible for the gender gap in education in Nigeria. Socio-cultural factors also play a major role in the constructions of gender identities in families. The socialisation process in family systems is believed to be central to gender identity construction. Investigating factors influencing gender identity construction in farmfamilies, this study establishes a link between gender identity construction, gender-role socialisation and...
