Food assistance is one of the most common forms of safety net programs in postconflict situations. Besides the humanitarian and promotional roles, there are widespread scepticisms of food assistance regarding its possible influence on disincentive to work and on crowding out of private transfers. While there is a relatively large amount of empirical research on social protection in stable context, it is less researched in post-conflict situations. Based on randomized evaluation of a...

In most countries of the world, higher education is highly subsidized by the public sector. The subsidy is a result of the role of higher education sector on the economy and good governance of the nations. Enrolment into higher institutions of learning is quite low in Africa compare to other continents of the world due to the continent's low and declining spending on her higher institutions of learning. This shabby contribution by the continent could be likened to a result of some imminent...

Abstract This study was conducted to assess forest biodiversity in the Sudanese Kordofan Region, identify threats, and suggest alleviation measures. The study revealed that Kordofan region encompasses diverse forestry species (more than 183 trees and shrub species) both indigenous and exotic. These species play a vital role in the economy of the region. They provide almost all the energy needs in terms of firewood and charcoal, timber for construction and building materials, foreign exchange...

In Cameroon, only 1/3 of children progress to secondary education. This paper estimates a sequential model of school attainment to investigate the role played by family background and individual characteristics in keeping children at school up to the end of secondary school. Using data of the 2001 Cameroon Household survey, we find that while parental wealth has no effect on the probability to enter primary school. It is however a good predictor of completing primary and secondary education....

In the past decade research into education has come under a great deal of pressure from national research agencies, and recently from a panel of editors who reflected on the content of articles submitted to their respective journals. This article responds to some of the matters raised by this panel of editors at the Kenton Conference in 2009. In so doing, it foregrounds both the contested nature of peer-review processes and the academic socialisation process.

Mattering to others has been shown to be a key construct of mental health and wellness. Emerging research links interpersonal mattering and school climate. In this study, the authors use transcendental phenomenology to explore how interpersonal mattering impacts the academic achievement of urban African American males who are academically successful in high school. Implications for the integration of this new information in school counseling are discussed.

The shear velocity structure beneath the Virunga volcanic area was estimated by using an average solution in the time domain inversion of stacked teleseismic receiver functions provided by two seismic broadband stations KUNENE (KNN) and KIBUMBA (KBB). These two stations are 29 km apart and located at the eastern and western escarpment of the Western Rift Valley of Africa in the Virunga area, respectively. The velocity model was presented as P-wave velocity models. From these models, the...

The advent of democracy and the easing of both legal and unauthorised entry to South Africa have made the country a new destination for Black asylum-seekers, long-distance traders, entrepreneurs, students and professionals. As this population continues to grow, its children have begun to experience South African schools in an array of uniquely challenging ways. In addition to opening their doors to all South African children irrespective of race, colour or creed, most public schools in South...

The two Palaeoarchaean volcano-sedimentary complexes of the Buck Ridge (Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa) and Kittys Gap (Coppin Gap Greenstone Belt, East Pilbara, Australia) have a similar geological setting and age (∼3.45 Ga). The predominantly volcaniclastic sediments are concentrated at the top of these complexes, and experienced thorough, (very) early diagenetic silicification. In many places the silicification process has led to excellent preservation of the primary sedimentary...

Learning in young adulthood, especially in communities where there may be substantial barriers to learning and exclusion from formal education, needs further investigation. This study provides an in-depth investigation of six youths’ predispositions to learning while awaiting trial in a place of safety. This study focused on an in-depth investigation of youths’ predispositions to learning in the particular context of the place of safety (Western Cape, South Africa). I have been working with...

The 765 Ma Luakela volcanics of northwest Zambia are a northeasttrending belt of basaltic to andesitic flows within an essentially undeformed and unmetamorphosed siliciclastic succession that unconformably overlies Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Congo craton margin.Paleomagnetic analysis of 65 samples from nine sites isolated three magnetization components.Component A, carried mainly by single-domain magnetite, is directed very shallowly to the southeast and northwest, and is...

On the basis of a comprehensive data set of precisely determined depths of 121 large to moderate‐sized earthquakes along and near the entire East African Rift System (EARS), there are three distinct patterns in focal depths which seem to correlate with progressive stages in the development of the largest active rift in the world. First, away from both ends of the western, younger branch of the EARS, very large ( M w ≥ 7) earthquakes occurred in the top 15 km of the crust where surficial...

Body mass index (BMI) is a commonly used anthropometric measurement to estimate the level of nutritional indices (underweight/overweight) of adolescents and adults. Knowledge of the factors affecting BMI is essential for developing intervention programs. This study was conducted to measure BMI and determine the socioeconomic and demographic factors affecting the relative weight of adolescents living in rural districts in Ethiopia.A randomized cross-sectional study of 425 adolescent students...
