A retrospective study of children admitted into the Children Emergency Room of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, between 1989 and 1998 was undertaken. This study investigated students' knowledge of, beliefs, attitude to and practices during menstruation. Data was collected from a sample of 200 students from Ile-Ife using the multi-stage sampling technique. Only 5% of respondents could correctly define menstruation. Height for age, weight for age, and weight for height as indices of nutritional status were evaluated in 1309 pupils from different socioeconomic classes in Ibadan, Nigeria. The data obtained were compared with United States National Centre for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference population.
