Illiteracy and low enrollment rates remain acute social problems in contemporary Morocco. To improve official data, the government had to open the market for primary education in rural areas to NGOs. This paper highlights the content of this new type of schooling through fieldwork conducted on Zakoura Foundation schools. It concludes that the low level of curricular achievement is linked to the NGOs' own constraints.

Abstract All members of the United Nations have pledged to meet eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015. This study looks at the MDG objectives and linkages between poverty, education, access to water, and household water use based on primary data collected in Madagascar.
