Many studies have investigated the socialisation impacts on sport participants, but few have examined the reciprocal socialisation that occurs in the households of the children or youth who participate. This paper utilises social cognitive theory, symbolic interactionism and sport socialisation to examine the reciprocal socialisation patterns in South African women's football. Five case studies of families are analysed to describe eight thematic areas of the socialisation factors and changes...

An improved water table fluctuation technique for estimating recharge is applied to a sustained (10-year) groundwater level monitoring record in Uganda, a rare dataset for tropical Africa, and compared against results from soil moisture balance models (SMBMs) and unsaturated flow models. The results show that recharge is directly proportional to rainfall (long-term average rainfall is around 1200 mm/a), even during times when high soil moisture deficits are anticipated. This indicates that...

Pre-1994, South Africa was a country riddled with inequality and discrimination stemming from the policy of ‘apartheid’. Since 1994, there have been considerable efforts made to enable the country to move toward becoming non-racial and democratic, with a culture of human rights and social justice. One of the primary tasks of the new democratically elected government was a reform of the education system. Specialized Education was initially neglected, but then in 1996 a National Commission was...

This article examines recent education policy (White Paper 6 on building an inclusive education and training system in South Africa, Department of Education 2001) for the purposes of identifying whether and how this policy reflects a community psychology approach to understanding and responding to psychosocial challenges in education. The authors then critically discuss the relevance and value of this approach in practice. The discussion concludes with case narratives by two of the authors,...

Despite Kenya Government’s commitment to enhancement of girl-child education, their participation rate at secondary school level is still notably low. Many studies on the girl-child education have concentrated in the rural populations with the assumption that the situation in the urban setting is nearly ideal. This was not the case as was evidenced in the period 2004-2007 whereby, mixed day secondary schools in Kisumu Municipality were averagely made up of only 43% girls. Headteachers as...

In this case study we explored the nature of music teacher training at one particular institution in Zimbabwe. We concluded that reasonable success was achieved to some extent in terms of preparing student teachers to implement the Zimbabwe Primary Music Syllabus (Curriculum Development Unit 1989). Serious reservations arise,...

This paper addresses the interactions between the AIDS epidemic and climate change in southern Africa, particularly as they impact on food security. An assessment was undertaken through a comprehensive literature review. Understanding the underlying causes of regional food insecurity inevitably means understanding the role of the AIDS epidemic and increasingly climate change amongst other stressors. AIDS cuts through household and community level capacity, as well as the capacity of key...
