Site response characteristics at seismic stations were investigated using horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratios calculated from a seismic-motion dataset of the 2003 Boumerdes earthquake, and transfer functions were evaluated from soil profile data. Although high peak ground acceleration (PGA) values were recorded at some sites, the nonlinear effect at these stations was not clear. The H/V spectral ratios calculated from weak and strong motion events did not show a clear difference in...

This book is concerned essentially with the volcanoes of the Gregory Rift valley, the southern-most extension of the East Africa Rift system where rifting impinges onto the Tanzanian craton. The volcanism in this region has a distinctly different flavour to that occurring along the more northern parts of this rift, and is characterized by some extremely peralkaline rocks, and includes the unique natrocarbonatite lavas of Oldoinyo Lengai. The book provides some interesting historical notes...

Socio-economic implication of the lifelong learning for all agenda is enormous. The very idea of lifelong learning frees learning from time and space constraints. It advocates learning to be an activity of a lifetime both within and without the formal education system. The assumption is that lifelong and life-wide learning will promote competitiveness, creativity, employability and social cohesion. Taking it in the context of developing countries such as Ethiopia, lifelong learning as an...

The Joint UK Land Environmental Simulator (JULES) was run offline to investigate the sensitivity of land surface type changes over South Africa. Sensitivity tests were made in idealised experiments where the actual land surface cover is replaced by a single homogeneous surface type. The vegetation surface types on which some of the experiments were made are static. Experimental tests were evaluated against the control. The model results show among others that the change of the surface cover...

Abstract This paper focuses on ‘sexual debut’ among out-of-school youth in Masaka District, Uganda, factors influencing its timing and assistance young people feel they need to delay sexual initiation. Data were drawn from a sexual health needs assessment using applied anthropological techniques with young people aged 13–19 years. Parents, guardians and community leaders were also consulted. All participants felt that young people begin their sexual lives too early. Young men feel under...

This study is an overview of the chequered nature of history education in Lesotho primary schools. It highlights the nineteenth century missionary-led, humble beginnings and goals of formal education, which did not change much during almost a century of British colonial rule. The thrust of the study is that Lesotho primary schools currently teach history as a concentrated component of Social Studies at Standard 6, which is illustrated with a few examples and a brief analysis of learners' work.

Kenya is among the African countries that have made notable advances in the quest for Universal Primary Education (UPE). Major landmarks in this regard include free primary education, increased enrolments, and an attempt to democratize education governance through decentralized management. However, the road towards full attainment of UPE has also been marked by increasingly complex internal inefficiencies in the form of increased dropout rates, congested classrooms, shortage of teachers and...

1This study investigates the eff ects of the quality of governance, namely corruption, political instability and democracy, on the public budget allocation to education by using data for a panel of 28 African countries over the period 1995–2004. The estimation results show that education expenditure is aff ected by the level of corruption, with highly corrupt countries devoting a smaller share of their budgets to this vote. Political instability impacts negatively on education, but the level...

Abstract In this article the focus falls on journalism education in relation to an agenda of social equality and justice. Its intention is to consider journalism education in relation to this purpose, and to do this it looks both at past and present journalism education programmes in South Africa. The pedagogy relevant to work-integrated learning (WIL) has formed a significant component of most educational processes and has become a necessity for the public relations industry in South Africa. Properly planned, designed and monitored programmes expose students to professional culture and workplace practice. This paper outlines the pedagogy underpinning WIL and uses a qualitative approach to reveal communication challenges experienced by students in the workplace. In addition, the paper...

Quaternary volcanism in the northern Main Ethiopian Rift is characterized by rift-axis eruptive centres with complicated collapse structures. Despite their association with major explosive eruptions, few modern studies have been carried out on them. We present the results of fieldwork and laboratory analyses of one of the largest of these centres, the Kone Volcanic Complex (KVC). It consists of nested calderas, trachyte lava flows, trachyte and alkali rhyolite pyroclastic deposits, alkali...

The Personal and Social Performance (PSP) scale is a widely used tool to evaluate adults with schizophrenia; however, more studies are needed regarding its usefulness in the assessment of adolescent patients, since the evaluation of their functioning could require adaptations according to development. To examine construct validity, convergent validity, internal consistency and interrater reliability of the PSP in a sample of Mexican adolescents with schizophrenia.A total of 40 patients with a...

Conceptions are analyzed as being the emergences from interactions between three poles: scientific knowledge (K), values (V) and social practices (P). The teachers' beliefs and values have a direct influence on the way of understanding and teaching a topic. These beliefs must be taken into account in the content and strategies of the teacher's formation. In this paper, the authors discuss the importance of studying and analyzing these conceptions and present the results of the research on...
