Botswana is one of the countries in Southern Africa that at one point was largely dependent on subsistence farming based on traditional methods. Agriculture consisted primarily of growing crops and raising animals for food (National Development Plan, 1968). Swartland (1984) stated that the search for educational curriculum relevance to the Botswana way of living started in 1941 when Dumbell, the first director of education for the Bechuanaland Protectorate, proposed the introduction of...

The 1998 Papua New Guinea earthquake of M w 7.0 occurred near the Wewak trench where the North Bismarck plate is subducting beneath the Australian plate. Its mechanism is thrust-type, and one of the nodal planes is almost parallel to the plate interface. To determine which of the two nodal planes of the main shock is the fault plane, we relocated the main shock and aftershocks using a method of modified joint hypocenter determination. We combined and employed two types of data in this study....

Learning is the most indispensable activity in the current knowledge-based economy where firms, in order to compete and survive, must be constantly alert, capable of adapting to fast change, constantly learn, evolve, and transform themselves rapidly. In that respect, the use of innovative information and communication technology is perceived to play a key role in the development of new learning platforms and mechanisms. One of the emerging solutions is electronic training "eTraining", which...

The body mass indices of 606 randomly selected adolescents in institutionalised schools in Akure, Nigeria, was investigated using anthropometric indices. Results showed that the mean age of males (163.37 months) was significantly higher (P 0.05), however the weight-for-height (W/H) and height-for-age (H/A) values were significantly different in the two groups (i.e male and female pupils). Weight, height and age showed positive correlation with W/H (R = 0.959, 0.624, and 0.573 respectively)...

A review of hospital admissions for stroke between January 1980 – December 1999 at the Medical wards of the the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu was undertaken to ascertain the frequency, patterns and risk factors associated with ischaemic strokes attributable to cardiogenic brain emolisation. The results showed that of the 450 medical admissions for ischemic stroke, 5.1% (23 cases) were cerebral infarction related to cardiogenic embolism. There was a male preponderance...

Simulation of tsunami propagation and runup of the 1998 Papua New Guinea (PNG) earthquake tsunami using the detailed bathymetry measured by JAMSTEC and adding bathymetric data at depths less than 60 m is carried out, reproducing the tsunami energy focus into Warapu and Arop along the Sissano Lagoon. However, the computed runup heights in the lagoon are still lower than those measured. Even if the error in estimating the fault parameters is taken into consideration, computational results are...

The apparent lack of developing basic- and integrated process skills of secondary school biology learners, triggered this investigation. Although the development of process skills of school learners is a required outcome of Curriculum 2005 and therefore an integral part of natural- and life science teaching, it is often neglected in the South African classroom. In an attempt to determine why this is so, a questionnaire was compiled and subsequently completed by 98 biology teachers in Gauteng Province.

This paper argues that the problems of educational access for non-nationals in South Africa lie not simply in failures of the current policies, although there are certainly instances where policies need modification, but largely in the implementation of existing policies, and the ways in which they are developed and modified. The paper reviews evidence in the international literature and draws on empirical evidence from a small study of a group of Zimbabwean migrant children to illustrate...

This study compares Nigeria National Computer Policy (1988) with existing school practice. Policy dictates for computer hardware, maintenance and funding, teaching personnel and training, and computer curriculum were compared. Information was collected from 20 secondary schools (10 public and 10 private) located in six different states in Nigeria through a questionnaire and interviews of teachers and students were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Comparisons of existing schools’ situations revealed that wide gaps existed.
